The documentary “Gurumbé, canciones de tu Memória negra”, which recalls the contribution of black populations to the history and culture of Andalusia, is shown on August 23, at 21 pm, at the Centro Cultural de Lagos.

Authored by Andalusian anthropologist and director Miguel Angel Rosales, and spoken in Spanish, the documentary will be screened with English subtitles.

In the 10th century, for example, “the black population represented XNUMX% of the population of port cities like Seville or Lisbon. If we assume, without obstacles, the Islamic cultural heritage, the investigation now demonstrates the contribution of black populations to the cultural wealth that characterizes the Iberian peoples, fully justifying this recognition», considers the City of Lagos.

The starting point of this Andalusian documentary is the port of Lagos and the discovery of 158 skeletons in the medieval and modern urban waste dump, a discovery that corroborated the active role of Portugal and Lagos in the slave trade.

The presentation, on the occasion of the International Day of the Memory of the Negreiro Traffic and its Abolition, will be attended by the director Miguel Angel Rosales, in a debate space that essentially intends to promote public comments and collect their impressions.

The initiative will end with the flamenco painting of London 'bailaora' Yinka Esi Graves, with roots in Ghana and Jamaica, for whom, in her own words, “the documentary allowed her to reconcile her head with her heart and who, with the its dances, contributes to rescue the heritage of African dance in the flamenco ball».

As for the municipality of Lacobrigense, he says he hopes that «this show, like the Museum of the Slavery Route of the Municipal Museum of Lagos, inaugurated last year, will fulfill the goal of deepening the debate on human trafficking and on the ongoing migratory tragedy staining the Mediterranean».
