The Hospital and University Center of the Algarve (CHUA) will "be born" in the next few days, after the President of the Republic promulgated this Thursday, 17 August, the Government diploma that provides for the creation of this new structure, which will replace the current Hospital Center of the Algarve.

The green light by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, announced today on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, was the necessary procedure for the Government to publish in Diário da República (DR) the diploma that was approved by the Council of Ministers on the 20th of July, which should happen «next week», hopes the president of the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve.

«After the promulgation of the President of the Republic, the diploma will be sent to the Secretary of State of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, to be later ratified by the Prime Minister and sent for publication. My perspective is that this could happen during the next week. This week will already be difficult, considering that today is Thursday», Paulo Morgado told Sul Informação.

From that moment onwards, hospitals in the Algarve became associated not only with each other, but also with the Center for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the South (CMR Sul) and with the Academic Center for Research and Biomedical Training of the Algarve, linked to the University .

Another immediate effect of the publication of this diploma in DR is the is of the current CHA Board of Directors, led by Joaquim Ramalho. Although there is still no official decision, the Government's option should be to replace the current administrators of the Algarve hospitals.

Second, the Público newspaper and the Sul Informação confirmed with various sources, the names of Ana Paula Gonçalves, former chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hospital de Faro, who should occupy the position of chairman of the Board of CHUA, and Hugo Nunes, current vice-president of the Chamber of Loulé, who is shaping up to be number two in the new structure.

Paulo Morgado again declined to comment on the names of the future CHUA administrators, bearing in mind that their choice is a decision "which is up to the Council of Ministers". Even so, it was hoped that the managers of the new structure would come into service "in early September". Until then, the ministers will meet twice, on the 24th and 31st of August, and it is more likely that a possible decision will only take place at the last meeting this month.

Until the entry of the new team, CHUA will remain under current management, which should not prevent some of the most urgent processes from progressing, such as the reinforcement of staff at CMR South. In September. In fact, it is more than an expectation, I will make things happen, given the great needs of this unit», assured the president of ARS do Algarve.

With the creation of the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA), the region once again has «two hospital units, one in Portimão/Lagos and the other in Faro, the Center for Medicine and Physical Rehabilitation of the South and a research center and connection with the University of the Algarve”, which will enjoy “great autonomy”.

“The goal is to increase the attractiveness of CHUA so that it can receive more doctors, nurses and other health technicians, and at the same time strengthen the connection with the University, namely strengthening and enhancing the medical course, in order to offer health professionals a opportunity to grow also in terms of research and in this way create a strong, attractive and dynamic hospital structure», according to ARS do Algarve.

In the case of Centro Académico, the diploma about to be published in DR introduces an amendment to the ordinance that created the center in April 2016, including ARS do Algarve in the partnership. "It goes a little deeper and creates an interaction with the ARS, which did not exist, enabling our professionals to be involved in the center's research activities, creating a regional dynamic that also includes Primary Health Care and not just hospital care," he explained Paulo Morgado.

The creation of this new model for Algarve hospitals aims to solve the chronic problem of the lack of doctors in the Algarve, taking into account that clinicians have shown little interest in filling the many vacancies that are opened for positions in the region, competition after competition.
