The Alliance Café, in Faro, is one of six featured in the “Historical Cafés” philatelic issue, which recalls some of the most emblematic Portuguese coffees in the country, launched today by CTT.

This issue comprises five stamps and a block representing six coffees, namely: Café Aliança, in Faro, Café A Brasileira, in Braga, Pastelaria Manuel Natário, in Viana do Castelo, Café Milenário, in Guimarães, Café Piolho (Âncora D'Ouro), in Porto, and Pastelaria Versailles, in Lisbon.

According to CTT, “all the cafes represented in this philatelic issue in various ways mark the local and national identity associated with urban living. “Taking a coffee” remains one of the most distinctive habits of the Portuguese character. This expression has long represented much more than the act of enjoying this hot drink. The phrase came to translate a commitment to a conversation, a meeting between friends, a meeting place».

«The golden age of coffees in Portugal is behind us, in a period between the mid-1907th century and the end of the first half of the XNUMXth century. At that time, the cafe as a place of conviviality had a strong affirmation among the urban bourgeoisie. Something that would be confirmed in the following decades, with the opening of larger and more sophisticated establishments in decoration and service. A good example can be found in the elegant A Brasileira de Braga, opened in XNUMX and included in this series», adds the company responsible for issuing the stamps.

The oldest and most historic cafes “have not only a rich material heritage, but also a great intangible heritage”.

This issue is part of the 2nd group of stamps of the philatelic series “Cafés Históricos”, the first of which was presented in October last year. Thus, CTT once again shows that "they seek, through philately and in accordance with their tradition, to divulge motifs of high national interest, in this case extolling Portuguese history and architecture".

This issue consists of five stamps with a face value of €0,50 each and a circulation of 125 copies each; the block with a stamp is worth €000 and a print run of 1,40 45 copies. The seals have a format of 000 X 30,6 mm and the block of 40X95mm.

The first day obliterations will be made in Restauradores stores, in Lisbon, Municipality, Porto, Zarco, Funchal, Antero de Quental, in Ponta Delgada, Avenida, in Braga, CTT store in Faro, CTT Guimarães store and CTT Viana do Castelo store.
