Between 2002 and 2015, 228 children and young people died as a result of drowning. June, July and August are the most critical months. The data are from APSI - Association for the Promotion of Child Safety, which has just launched its 15th edition of the Drowning Prevention Campaign.

Swimming pools and rivers, streams and ponds are the places with the highest record of these accidents, while boys continue to record the highest rate of drowning.

APSI also emphasizes that, despite the average number of drowning deaths having decreased in the last five years (average/year 2011-2015), “there is a very high number of hospitalizations associated with this type of accident”.

In the last 14 years, 554 hospitalizations were registered following drowning, which means that for every child who dies, 2 to 3 are hospitalized.

“These numbers continue to be high, taking into account that these accidents are the 2nd cause of accidental death and most of them can be avoided”, says Sandra Nascimento, president of APSI.

A Association launches once again the campaign «Death by Drowning is Quick and Silent», which will be in effect until the 15th of September.
