The bishop of the Algarve revealed that the diocese and the Chamber of Faro they are studying the creation of a press museum in the former União Typography, when a museum group linked to the edition of the “Pentateuch” was announced.

«It is only by joining efforts that we are able to carry out this initiative to preserve what we have inherited», said D. Manuel Quintas on the creation of a museological nucleus by the Portuguese Communications Foundation linked to the beginning of the press in Portugal through the edition of the “Pentateuco” .

In the information sent to the ECCLESIA Agency, the diocesan bishop wished that the project could also serve education, with visits from all schools, and not just culture and tourism.

The diocesan newspaper 'Folha do Domingo' reports that the announcement made by the president of the Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações was recorded in the presentation of a 'fac-simile' re-edition of the first book printed in Portugal, at the São José Seminary, in Faro.

In this context, Luís de Andrade assumed the «commitment to lend as a loan, for a time that may be considered necessary», the replica of the Gutenberg press that is part of the foundation's collection.

«We are open to collaborate and participate in promoting everything that concerns this book and also in creating spaces to host, if possible and necessary, the replica of the press», stated D. Manuel Quintas.

The bishop of Algarve also thanked publications offered by Luís de Andrade related to the history of communications and the chronology of writing in Antiquity, Middle Ages and Modern Age.

According to the diocesan newspaper, the museum nucleus of the Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações, "should be installed" in the space of the former chapel of the Episcopal Palace, "where several exhibitions have already been held".

It was in this context that D. Manuel Quintas also announced that the Diocese of Algarve, with the Chamber of Faro, is also studying the creation of a press museum on the premises of the former União Typography.

«We have machines there that I was told were unique in Portugal, linked to the printing of 'Folha do Domingo'. It is a space that needs investment to be restored», he added, quoted by the diocesan newspaper.
