A cliff that threatened to fall onto Barranco das Canas beach, better known as Praia do Alemão, in Portimão, was this morning safely dismantled by the services of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).

Sebastião Teixeira, director of APA in the Algarve, told the Sul Informação that the situation “was detected by the Maritime Police last week” and, before it caused problems, “this preventive action was taken forward”.

In total, the operation, which forced some early riser bathers away, lasted "just over an hour".

"It was an unforeseen action, but whenever situations like this arise, we will act," added Sebastião Teixeira. "The aim is, as much as possible, to ensure the safety of bathers," he concluded.
