22 parishes in the Algarve will have new parish priests

The parishes of Algoz and Guia, Monchique, Alferce and Marmelete, Estômbar and Ferragudo, Alvor, Conceição de Tavira, Sé and São Luís (Faro), Fuzeta and Moncarapacho, Estoi and Santa Bárbara de Nexe, Montenegro (Faro), Quelfes, São Bartolomeu de Messines and São Marcos da Serra, Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo and São Brás de Alportel and Silves will have new parish priests, according to information revealed by the Folha do Domingo newspaper.

According to the diocesan newspaper, the Bishop of the Algarve, D. Manuel Quintas, appointed Father José Águas, 72, as pastor of the parishes of Algoz (including the community of Tunes) and Guia.

The priest has been parish priest of Alferce, Marmelete and Monchique since September 2003 and will replace Father Manuel Condeço who has been parish priest of Algoz parishes (including the Tunis community) since October 2001 and Guia since July 2003.

The inauguration of Father José Águas in the new parishes will take place on the 27th of August in a Eucharist presided over by Father Carlos de Aquino, Vicar of the Court, at 18 pm, in the parish church of Guia.

Father Manuel Condeço

Father Manuel Condeço, 76 years old, was appointed parish priest of the parishes of Estômbar and Ferragudo, the latter where he had already been prior from August 1989 to September 1991. In these parishes he will replace Father Miguel Ângelo Pereira who was there parish priest, respectively, since September 2014 and September 2013, and the parish of Estômbar also had Fathers Domingos Fernandes and José Nunes as parish vicars. The inauguration of Father Manuel Condeço in the new parishes will take place on the 19th of August in a Eucharist presided over by the Bishop of Algarve, at 18:00 in the parish church of Ferragudo.

Father Miguel Ângelo Pereira, 35 years old, who in addition to Estômbar and Ferragudo was parish vicar of the parish of Lagoa and of the parish vicariates of Mexilhoeira da Carregação and Parchal, was appointed pastor of the parish of Alvor and of the vicariate of the Sacred Heart of Jesus da Pedra Mourinha, in Portimão.

In these new communities, Father Miguel Ângelo Pereira will replace Father Manuel Honorato Antunes, 91-year-old priest of the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Claretian Missionaries), who was parish priest of Alvor since 1989 and of the Vicariate of Pedra Mourinha since 2001 The inauguration of Father Miguel Ângelo in the new parishes will take place on the 20th of August in a Eucharist presided over by the Bishop of Algarve, at 18:00 in the parish church of Alvor.

Father Fernando Rafael Rocha

D. Manuel Quintas also appointed Father Fernando Rafael Rocha, 38, as pastor of the parish of Conceição de Tavira. The priest has been parish vicar in that community since September last year, and Father Miguel Neto will become parish vicar. In the remaining parishes of Santa Maria and São Tiago de Tavira and in the chaplaincy of Santa Luzia de Tavira, Father Miguel Neto will remain as parish priest and Father Rafael Rocha as parish vicar. The inauguration of Father Fernando Rafael Rocha in the new parish will take place on the 17th of September in a Eucharist presided over by the Bishop of Algarve, at 10:00 am in the parish church of Conceição de Tavira.

Father Rui Guerreiro

The diocesan bishop also appointed Father Rui Guerreiro, 43, as pastor of the parishes of Sé and São Luís de Faro. The priest has been parish priest of Fuseta and Moncarapacho since August 2011 and of Quelfes since August 2015 and will replace him in the Cathedral of Faro, Canon José Pedro Martins who was prior of that parish since September 2009.

In São Luís, Father Rui Guerreiro will replace Father António da Rocha, who moved in 1969 to that pastoral area on the edge of the city of Faro, at the time in strong development, having worked there for the foundations of the Vicariate in 1983 and of the Parish in June 1992.

In this parish, the new parish priest will continue to have the collaboration of deacon Rogério Egidio (connected to the community since its foundation) also appointed to work in association with the prior. The inauguration of Father Rui Guerreiro in the parish of the Cathedral of Faro will take place on September 3rd at 12:00 pm in the cathedral and in the parish of São Luís on September 9th at 19:15 pm, both Mass being presided over by the bishop of the Algarve.

Father António da Rocha, 75 years old, was appointed pastor of the parishes of Fuzeta and Moncarapacho, replacing Father Rui Guerreiro. In addition to being pastor of the parish of São Luís de Faro, the priest has been parish priest of Montenegro since 2001. The inauguration of Father António da Rocha in the new parishes will take place on September 9th in Masses presided over by the Bishop of Algarve, at 17 pm in the parish church of Fuzeta and on September 00th, at 10:11 am in Moncarapacho.

Canon José Pedro Martins

For his part, Canon José Pedro Martins, 74, was appointed parish priest of Estoi and Santa Bárbara de Nexe, replacing Father Jesús Ejocha, prior of those communities since September last year. Father José Pedro Martins returns to Santa Bárbara de Nexe where he had already worked, while still a seminarian in the 60s of the last century.

In those parishes, the new parish priest will continue to have the collaboration of deacon Luis Galante (in Estoi since September 2011 and in Santa Bárbara de Nexe since February 2012), also appointed to work in association with the prior. The inauguration of Canon José Pedro Martins in the new parishes will take place on the 3rd of September in a Eucharist presided over by the Bishop of Algarve, at 10:00 am in the parish church of Santa Bárbara de Nexe.

Father Jesus Ejocha

For the parish of Montenegro, the bishop of the Algarve appointed Canon Carlos César Chantre, 65 years old, who will accumulate with the parish of São Pedro de Faro (including the community of São Paulo do Patacão), of which he has been prior since September 2013. Canon César Chantre's inauguration in the new parish will take place on September 10 in a Eucharist presided over by the bishop of Algarve, at 9:30 am in the church of the Montenegro.

Father Jesús Ejocha, 36, was appointed parish priest of Alferce, Marmelete and Monchique. The inauguration of Father Jesús Ejocha in the new parishes will take place on the 26th of August in a Eucharist presided over by Father Nuno Coelho, vicar of the court, at 18:00 in the parish church of Monchique.

For the parish of Quelfes, D. Manuel Quintas appointed Father Armando Amâncio, 45, who will join the parish of Olhão, of which he has been parish priest since November 2015, and with the Vicariate of Siroco, in that city, of which he is parish priest since June of last year. The priest's inauguration in the new parish will take place on September 17 in a Eucharist presided over by Canon Carlos César Chantre, vicar general of the Diocese of Algarve, at 12:00 pm in the parish church of Quelfes.

Father Eduardo Colocho

The bishop of Algarve also appointed to the parishes of São Bartolomeu de Messines and São Marcos da Serra Father Eduardo Colocho, 57 years old, belonging to the Fraternity of the Mother of God (FMD), who will replace the priest Atalívio Rito, priest of the same private association of the faithful, who had been parish priest of those communities since August 2015. Father Eduardo Colocho, born in El Salvador and ordained in 2004 by D. Manuel Quintas at the Cathedral of Faro, followed the following year to work in his native diocese, having returned in the last year to work in the community of Onuva, of the FMD, in Puebla del Río, Seville.

The priest's inauguration in the new parishes will take place on the 24th of September in a Eucharist presided over by the bishop of the Algarve, at 10:15 am in the parish church of São Bartolomeu de Messines.

D. Manuel Quintas also appointed the priests António Farias Antunes and Duarte Costa, both 69 years old and priests of the Congregation of Espírito Santo (Missionarios Spiritans), as parish priests in solidum (solidarity) for the parishes of Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo and São Brás de Alportel, the latter being parish priest in solidum those parishes since September of last year and that the former will act as moderator.

The nominees replace the priests Afonso and José da Cunha Duarte from the same congregation, respectively parish vicar since September 1997 and pastor since October 1984 of those parishes, who will leave the Diocese of Algarve.

Father Nelson Rodrigues

Father António Farias Antunes – after having held various positions in his congregation (including at the level of the General Council) and who in 2013 went as a missionary to the Amazon, from which he returned in May this year – and Father Duarte Costa will be sworn in at the next 20th of august in Eucharist presided over by the bishop of the Algarve, at 10:30 am in the parish church of São Brás de Alportel.

The Bishop of Algarve also appointed Father Nelson Rodrigues, 28, as parish priest of Silves. the priest was parish priest in solidum (solidarity) of the parishes of São Clemente and São Sebastião de Loulé since August of last year and will replace Father Vasco Figueirinha who was prior of Silves since February 2014. The inauguration of Father Nelson Rodrigues in the new parish will take place next year 15th of August in Eucharist presided over by the Bishop of the Algarve, at 11:00 am in the Cathedral of Silves.

D. Manuel Quintas also appointed Father José Chula, 27 years old, as parish vicar of the parishes of Aljezur, Bordeira, Odeceixe, Raposeira, Sagres and Vila do Bispo, with Father Nuno Coelho remaining as parish priest. Father José Chula, who was parish vicar of the Cathedral of Faro since August of last year, it will be presented in parishes on the 27th of August by Father Nuno Coelho.
