For now, an effective application and another one by proximity is guaranteed. The “We Citizens!” is working to present six candidacies to local authorities in Tavira, Monchique and Albufeira, opting to support candidacies already announced in other municipalities in the region. On Saturday, a delegation from this party came to Olhão to make official support for the socialist António Pina, in what could only be the first visit of its kind to the Algarve.
The support offered to António Pina – spontaneously, without any counterparts – is due to the fact that “ Nós Cidadãos” sees a mayor who is close to the population in the mayor of Olho.
“We support António Pina for several reasons, from the outset because he is someone who is very connected to the citizens. He is a very interventionist politician in the most difficult times, such as showing his face, and he is a person who, for us, is well into local affairs. We also express our support for the people who involve them, who are dear to us, such as Carlos Nunes, from Tavira», revealed Artur Montenegro, national coordinator of elections for “We Citizens!”.
For the representative of this party, who emerged from civic movements that protested against the austerity measures imposed by the Troika in 2012, the important thing is to "fight for citizenship". “We can work together. We don't need to be elected, what we want is for whoever is elected to be with the citizens. And, as far as we know about António Pina, he is with the people», he reinforced.
On the same “level” are other mayors from the Algarve, José Amarelinho (Aljezur) and Osvaldo Gonçalves (Alcoutim), to whom the party created in 2013 is considering offering its support.
In the meantime, “We Citizens!” will continue to develop its own candidacies for the 2017 Local Elections. Garantida is already a list for the Municipal Assembly of Tavira, headed by Carlos Nunes. There are also already signed agreements for candidacies for municipal bodies in Monchique – «City and Parish Councils» – and Albufeira, as revealed on Saturday by this party's candidate for AM de Tavira.
«Possibly, there will be support for the candidacy of José Amarelinho, in Aljezur, and an agreement with Alcoutim. We are talking about mayors, people who work for people», added Carlos Nunes.
António Pina, who did not hide the fact that he was surprised by this expression of support from “We Citizens!”, says he saw it “with great satisfaction”. “I see myself in the reasons why they will support me. In fact, our way of being in these four years was to work for people. The fight against the declassification of the nurseries, the issue of the islands, the Participatory Budget and the Caring project are examples», considered the mayor from Olho.
On the other hand, the socialist candidate for the Chamber of Olhão undertook to include a little of Us in his electoral program. “I am available to work with you from now on. I would like to know the letter of principles of “We Citizens!” to include it in my candidacy», concluded António Pina.
