The lecture “See, Draw, Know”, with the illustrator João Simões, author of the exhibition “Portugal Selvagem”, takes place this Friday, June 9th, at 18 pm, at the Centro Ciência Viva (CCV) in Lagos.

In the conversation “See, Draw, Know”, we will «talk and hear about what drawing is for this author. Often, due to lack of training, we draw what we know – we see it with our eyes closed. We see what we already know, and, because we know, we stop seeing it», says the CCV of Lagos, which thus presents another “Fridays with Science”.

«To draw, we need to see. See truly. Don't just look. This is why many people, when drawing the human figure in profile, draw the eye from the front. They already know what an eye looks like and don't even bother to really see it,” he adds.

For João Simões, it's as if he only really knew something after drawing it. Drawing forces you to see, then draw and thus know.

In this lecture, the author will also talk about scientific illustration, its history in Portugal and artistic techniques, as it was scientific illustration that changed the way he started to approach drawing.

And, of course, he will talk about the exhibition “Portugal Selvagem”, on display at the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos until 11 June, as well as why he represented animals from Portugal, the techniques he used, the time it took and future projects.

In the morning, the illustrator will be with students from Escola Secundária Júlio Dantas to talk and demonstrate some of the techniques he uses.

João Simões is a designer and illustrator, having studied Robotics at Instituto Superior Técnico. He also studied History of Art and Model Drawing at the National Society of Fine Arts, Scientific Illustration at the Faculty of Sciences, and Scientific Illustration at the Institute of Arts and Crafts of the Autonomous University of Lisbon.

Although he has always been drawing, it was in the scientific illustration course that he discovered his favorite technique – the scratchboard. This technique allows you to represent in detail your favorite theme – the animal world.

«It is a time-consuming and patient work that each illustration, depending on the detail and size, can take months to complete», says the Lagos CCV. João Simões also uses other techniques such as gouache, watercolor, airbrush and digital painting.

The author enjoys taking walks through nature, seeing the birds, the sea, always finding something new to see, draw and learn about.

Admission to the lecture is free.
