The Festas da Cidade de Olhão, to be held from the 14th to the 17th of June, will feature a concert by Marco Paulo, on the 16th (municipal holiday), at 22 pm, at Jardim Pescador Olhanense.

But not only music will be celebrated, so also on the 16th, at 11:15 am, the project for the Development of the Port of Abrigo de Olhão will be presented – and the respective concession contract signed – in a session to be held at Royal Marina Hotel & Spa, and which will have the presence of Ana Paula Vitorino, Minister of the Sea.

Before that, at 9:30 am, the hoisting of the flags took place in the Paços do Concelho, followed by a tribute, in front of the Igreja Matriz, to the “Heroes of the Restoration of 9” at 45:1808 am.

At 10:00 am, the exhibition “Olhão com História” will be inaugurated, on Avenida da República, and the inauguration of the “Memorial to the Combatants of the First Great War”, at 10:30 am, in Jardim João Serra.

As for the solemn commemorative session of the Day of the City, it will take place at the Hall of Hall of the Town Hall, at 12:30 pm.

From 16:30 pm, there will be the inauguration of the renovation works at the Pinheiros de Marim Sports and Leisure Park and the children's playground at Quinta João de Ourém.

At 18 pm, at the Municipal Library, an exhibition of the works of the Olhanenses Painters Center will be inaugurated.

And since the Festas da Cidade are not limited to the municipal holiday, on June 14th, at 18 pm, the “Olhão ao Vivo” initiative takes to the stage, which includes the performance of music schools and local bands and is repeated on the 00th and 15. On Thursday, the 17th, there will still be room for performance, from 15:22 pm, by Baby Lores and Luís (Gomes). All in Jardim Pescador Olhanense.

Over the four days, from 18 pm to midnight, there will also be street food and basketball 3 × 3, at the same place.

And what is the historical reason behind the municipal holiday in Olhão? «During the French occupation of the Algarve, in 1808, a popular uprising against the abuses of the invaders emerged in Olhão, on 16 June. This revolt culminated in the expulsion of the French from the place of Olhão and, on impulse, from the entire Algarve», begins by telling that City Council.

«The following month, 17 men from Olhão embarked for Brazil, aboard the Bom Sucesso caique, with the mission of taking the news of the expulsion to the Colony Court. The aforementioned crew carried an unofficial missive, which described the audacious attitude taken by the people of Oyenne in this revolt», he adds.

«The reward was translated into a Charter with the force of Law, with which the Prince-Regent decided to distinguish Olhão and its inhabitants, moving from place to Vila and ordering that “it be called Vila de Olhão da Restauração”. It is this history and heritage that the council celebrates annually», concludes the municipality.
