Applications for specialist doctors who want to work in the Algarve during the summer, to face the peak of tourist influx, are now open. An order published in the Diário da República on Wednesday, June 7th, invites clinicians from across the country to settle in the Algarve region until September 30th, under the exceptional model of medical personnel mobility.

According to the Algarve Regional Health Administration (ARS), physicians of all specialties are welcome, but preference will be given to General and Family Medicine (ARS Algarve/ACES Barlavento; Sotavento; Central), Anesthesiology, Orthopedics, Gynecology/ Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Nephrology and Medical Oncology (Centro Hospitalar do Algarve – units of Faro, Portimao). In other specialties, acceptance of the mobility regime is subject to the "assessment of supervening needs".

«With this measure, the Ministry of Health intends to reinforce, during the 2017 summer period, medical assistance in the Algarve region, without, however, compromising the regular and normal functioning of other health services and establishments. This mobility model streamlines the procedure for placing specialist doctors, particularly in situations where they are essential for adequate coverage of care, ensure the constitution of emergency stopovers and increase medical assistance, resorting to mobility, namely partial mobility provided for in the law, thus ensuring the number of physicians essential for the provision of quality health care», framed the ARS do Algarve.

Physicians who voluntarily want to join the scheme «Reinforcement of Medical Assistance in the Algarve during the summer period» can submit their application by filling out the form available on the ARS do Algarve website. This document should be sent to the email [email protected], once completed.

«The form must be filled in manually, dated, signed by the candidate and sent, as indicated in the respective order», according to the Algarvian ARS.

According to the entity responsible for managing the Algarve's National Health Service, «applications do not require the agreement of the body or service of origin and entitle the doctor to the payment of daily allowances and any transport expenses».
