A mass of hot air originating in North Africa, transporting suspended particles and dust in the circulation, once again affects mainland Portugal today, 16 May, but «with special incidence in the Algarve», announced the Coordination and Algarve Regional Development, citing the Portuguese Environment Agency.

This situation of desert dust will be "especially troublesome, given the higher temperatures of this season," adds the information from the APA.

«A circulation from the Southeast at low levels of the atmosphere and the consequent transport of the air mass originating in North Africa could contribute to the increase of particles and dust in suspension, in the Algarve and Alentejo regions», explains that entity.

«This natural phenomenon affects the quality of the ambient air, and it is estimated that it can contribute to an increase in the concentrations of suspended particles (…), between 10 and 40 units, in the Algarve and Alentejo regions», says the APA.
