The book “O Infante D. Henrique: mayor of Silves (1457): commemorations of 550 years” is presented on May 19, at 18 pm, at the Municipal Library of Silves.

This is a work that, in addition to presenting studies on local people in the period of the Discoveries and on two important monuments, the Cathedral and the Alcaidaria do Castelo de Silves, «is of paramount importance for understanding the importance that the city had in the period of the Discoveries», says the local Chamber.

Therefore, the municipality recognized «the importance of the works and their scientific added value for the study and understanding of our local history, as well as their scientific-pedagogical value, in trying to fill gaps in our history».

The work brings together in a book the communications presented at the colloquium alluding to the important contributions of the Infante to the city, held on the occasion of the commemorations of the 550th anniversary of the date on which that prince of the Inclita Generation occupied the position of Mayor of Silves.

The colloquium brought together researchers who presented their contributions to the clarification of local and regional history, such as João Silva de Sousa, with the presentation of the panel “The Infante D. Henrique and the Importance of Alcaidaria-Mor de Silves”, and João Paulo Oliveira and Costa, who addressed the theme “Silves, the last piece of puzzle from the Algarve of Infante D. Henrique”.

These were also joined by Teresa Lacerda, with “The people of Silves and the Henriquinos Discoveries”, Joana Ramôa and José Custódio Vieira da Silva, through the joint communication “The Gothic Cathedral of Silves – the different constructive moments”, well such as Rosa Varela Gomes, with “Alcaidaria do Castelo de Silves – contribution to its study”.

This archeologist has been, in fact, responsible for the investigation works inside the Castle of Silves, which focus on what remains of the alcaidaria, and which they uncovered, for example, the circular structure in red sandstone of the sugar mill that would have been used when Infante D. Henrique was Mayor of Silves, in the mid-fifteenth century.
