On May 9, 1950, Schuman proposed, inspired by Jean Monnet, the creation of a European community to manage two important resources, coal and steel, which were the basis of military power and industrial development as a guarantee of peace. In 1951 the ECSC – Coal and Steel Community is created. This first supranational organization paved the way for the EEC – European Economic Community, later called the European Union.

“The 9th of May – Europe Day – was celebrated for the first time in 1986. Initially addressed in particular to the school community, it is today one of the symbols of the European Union and is an opportunity to develop activities and celebrations that bring Europe closer to its citizens” , concludes the Chamber of Lagos.
