The demolition of 10 houses on Ilha do Farol started this morning, the 18th of April. The action has gone smoothly, despite an incident with a young man who barricaded himself inside one of the houses and who ended up being detained.

As Commander Pedro Palma, of the Maritime Police revealed to TVI, the detainee "is a homeless man who claimed he had authorization from the owners to occupy the house."

Feliciano Julio, President  of the Association of the Island of the Farol of Santa Maria, added in statements to the Sul Informação that the man had already occupied the house "for about two years", when the house "was given to him by the owner".

Now, he was taken to the Captaincy of Faro, and it is planned that it will later be referred to Social Security, so that an accommodation solution can be guaranteed.

However, "three or four houses" were demolished in the morning, and it is expected that by the end of the week the remaining buildings, which are, in all, 19, "between houses and tents" will be demolished.

Pending are the situations of another 24 houses, which are still awaiting court decisions. In a first phase, 11 Provisional Measures were presented, relating to the administrative swearing-in process. In the meantime, another 13 Provisional Measures were filed at the Loulé Administrative Court "which ask that the demolition act be cancelled."

The houses are being torn down following the administrative possession of houses by the technicians of the Polis Ria Formosa Society, on the 22nd of February.

The islanders promised to settle “between the machines and the dwellings”, when this demolition process began.
