PCP promotes on Friday, March 31, at noon, a concentration in front of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) office in Gambelas, parish of Montenegro (Faro), whose closure is in the plans of the administration of the Portuguese public bank.
The concentration will feature the intervention of António Mendonça, member of PCP's DORAL and CDU councilor at the Municipality of Faro.
The communists point out that this is Caixa's only dependency in the entire parish of Montenegro, and that it even has “a high number of customers and daily movements”.
This CGD branch, located right next to the main entrance of the University of Algarve's Campus de Gambelas, «is of great importance for the population, especially the elderly, for the academic community and for the population in general», adds the PCP.
The communists point out that «the news that indicates the decision of the Administration of Caixa Geral de Depósitos to close another branch in the municipality of Faro, in Gambelas, parish of Montenegro, should deserve the repudiation of its customers and all who want CGD to serve the people and the country».
"The intense operation carried out during the government of the PSD and CDS against CGD continues to produce its effects, with the objective of weakening and discrediting Caixa with a view to its privatization", they defend.
For the PCP, "CGD must remain under public control and have an Administration that reinforces its presence throughout the national territory".
According to this party, «the necessary and urgent recapitalization of Caixa Geral de Depósitos cannot serve as a pretext to implement “restructuring” that promote the closure of branches, layoffs of workers, weakening its role as a public bank, in order to defend the interests of private banking'.
«At a time when the country is witnessing an intense operation that the PSD, CDS and big business have been carrying out against CGD, the threat of these closures cannot be disconnected from the wrong decisions taken by the PS government regarding CGD and that contradict a Caixa at the service of the People and the national economy”, conclude the communists.
