Finally there is white tobacco: José Pedro Caçorino, regional leader of the CDS and current councilor elected by the coalition «Servir Portimão», will be the head of the list of the newly formed coalition PSD/CDS (or CDS/PSD…) candidate for the Municipality of Portimão in Local elections next autumn.

The coalition agreement was signed this weekend, in another meeting between the District Political Commissions of Faro of the PPD/PSD and of the CDS/Popular Party.

In addition to Portimão, there will also be joint candidacies of the two parties in nine other Algarve municipalities: Faro, Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Lagos, Loulé, Olhão, São Brás de Alportel and Vila do Bispo.

But the most difficult case was even that of Portimão, where negotiations between PSD and CDS, with many advances and setbacks, were extended over more than a year, as Sul Informação was realizing.

However, while David Santos, president of the PSD/Algarve District, is still cautious in his words and, in statements to our newspaper, this morning, he only confirmed the signing of the coalition agreement, adding that «the names and lists are the phase that will begin now», José Pedro Caçorino, also contacted, confirms that he himself will be the candidate for the Portimão Chamber for the new coalition.

For the Municipal Assembly, the head of the list could be the young Carlos Gouveia Martins, president of the Social Democratic Youth (JSD) in the Algarve and son of a PSD historical from Portimo, Carlos Martins.

But this is not yet 100% closed: David Santos does not speak in names, while Caçorino stresses that "it is now up to the PSD to indicate a name to lead the candidate list for the Municipal Assembly".

Despite the reluctance of the president of the PSD/Algarve to announce the regional leader of the CDS as a candidate for the Chamber of Portimão, the truth is that the centrists had already made it known that they would only accept the coalition with the Social Democrats if their leader, the Portimão José Pedro Caçorino, was number 1 on the list. Thus, this was the scenario already negotiated between the two political forces.

Now falls on Caçorino's shoulders the responsibility of trying to achieve an even better result than that of the Municipalities of 2013, when the coalition «Servir Portimão», which mainly included CDS, independent and discontented of the PSD, was the second most voted political force.

According to the joint communiqué from the Districts of the two parties, “following a permanent work of political collaboration between the municipal and district structures of both parties, it was possible to reach a global coalition agreement for the municipal elections that will be held. be in the autumn of 2017'.

«The agreement reached came about as a result of a joint vision of the two parties in relation to the problems and challenges that the populations of these municipalities will face over the next four years, also constituting a committed commitment of their leaders, candidates, militants and supporters in the construction of a consensus and participated in comprehensive political projects, focused on solving the problems of voters and building solid government solutions», adds the statement signed by David Santos, president of the PSD District, and José Pedro Caçorino, president of the CDS District.

Within the framework of the coalition agreement now obtained, the two parties «expressly committed themselves to promoting the democratic articulation of joint positions of the respective local elected representatives, in the various municipal bodies (Executives of Municipal Chambers and Parish Councils, Municipal and Parish Assemblies) , with the coordination of the majority party in each of the bodies».

Another commitment is to "assume, in AMAL, the Intermunicipal Assembly and in other bodies/institutions where both parties are called to vote, positions and concerted proposals, pledging to present joint candidacies to them", as well as "seek to extend the agreement celebrated to other political forces, the Independents and other forces of civil society'.
