A delegation from the Municipality of Lagoa, made up of the President of the Municipal Assembly José Águas da Cruz, Councilwoman Anabela Simão and Jorge Cabrita, responsible for the Geminations Office, made an official visit, between 9 and 15 March, to São Domingos, in Cape Green. Lagoa and São Domingos have been twinned since 1997.

The Cape Verdean municipality has a new municipal executive since the last elections in September last year, headed by Clemente Delgado Garcia, so the visit of the Algarve delegation was not limited to participation in the festivities commemorating the creation of the municipality, but also held meetings and held visits to municipal facilities, «in order to rethink the existing level of cooperation between the two Municipalities, opening new horizons and outlining specific actions», explains the Câmara de Lagoa, in a press release.

As has been customary since 2015, the Lagoon entourage took educational and school material, sports equipment and children's books, collected by the Education Services, Youth and Sports Services and the Twinning Office, this time to equip the 1st cycle of basic education school from Praia de Baixo.

The Lagoa delegation also participated in the opening of the Praia de Baixo Music Festival and in the inauguration of the Vila de São Domingos Handicraft, Health and Farming Fair.

The county's day commemorations began with a Thanksgiving Mass at the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, in Milho Branco, followed by the Solemn Session of the Municipal Assembly, at the Noble Hall of the Delegation of the Municipality of Nossa Senhora da Luz , which was attended by the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Ulisses Silva, the presidents of the Municipal Assembly and the Chamber of São Domingos, Martinho Landim and Clemente Delgado Garcia, the rest of the executive, as well as delegations from the twin cities with São Domingos – Lagoa, Barcelos, Vila Nova de Famalicão and Gondomar – as well as the mayors of the Island of Santiago and other local and regional personalities.

In her speech, councilor Anabela Simão stressed that "looking to the future" and betting on the "growth of training of technical staff and the commitment to youth", the Municipality of Lagoa participated in four scholarships so that as many young people in the Municipality from São Domingos to attend the University of the Algarve.

The Algarve mayor added that it is a «great pride for both Municipalities to have as councilor of the Municipality of São Domingos a young woman with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Algarve, supported by a grant awarded by the Municipality of Lagoa, which will certainly greatly contribute to the development of the county».

Anabela Simão concluded by saying that «the twinning experience of these twinned Municipalities is very positive and, 20 years later, looking at the new challenges that the future foresees, it is necessary to further deepen the relationship between them, in the sense of greater innovation and dynamism , cooperation that will be reinforced institutionally and personally with the availability of the Municipalities of Lagoa and São Domingos to embrace this new challenge».
