The founder and president of the Algarve Oncological Association, José Santos Pereira, died this morning, following a cardiac arrest.

He was known for his dedication to improving the lives of cancer victims in the Algarve, but also for his medical career, which led to the Ministry of Health to award him the Gold Degree Medal, in 2012, in recognition of the importance of the work developed, throughout his professional life, in favor of the National Health Service, for his exceptional human qualities, altruism and ethics, attested by those with whom he shared his professional life.

 

Who was Dr. Santos Pereira?

José Alberto Fernandes dos Santos Pereira was born on December 5, 1936, in Povoação de Cuma, in the municipality of Robert Williams, in the District of Huambo, in Angola.

Degree in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon in 1965.

He began his medical career in Angola in 1967.

Specialist in General Surgery and Tropical Medicine.

Having returned to the Continent, he began working in the Surgery Service at the District Hospital of Portalegre, as a volunteer, between March 1967 and April 30, 1978. He continued his activity in the Surgery Service as a specialty intern until 23 October 1978.

On November 1, 1978, he began his duties at the Hospital de Faro as an Intern in the Surgery Specialty.

Throughout his career, especially during the period in which he provided services at the District Hospital of Faro, replaced the Director of Service several times.

In 1990, he created the Senology Consultation in the Surgery Service at the District Hospital of Faro.

In 1991, he was part of the Oncology Coordination Committee of the District Hospital of Faro.

Graduated Assistant in General Surgery at the same institution, since March 6, 1998.

On May 31, 1999, he was appointed physician responsible for the Senology Nucleus of the District Hospital of Faro.

During the exercise of his activity, he was appointed to hold some positions, highlighting:

• Member of the Coordination and Exchange of Services Commission between the ARS and the District Hospital of Faro;
• Member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee;
• Member of the Antibiotics Commission,
• Oncology Coordination Commission of the District Hospital of Faro.

Throughout his career, he developed several scientific works.

In 1994, he founded the Associação Oncológica do Algarve, made up of volunteers with personal and professional experience of problems associated with cancer. It is a Private Institution of Social Solidarity, of public utility, not for profit, which aims to fight cancer and support cancer patients, in addition to providing social and human support to these patients and promoting their integration into the community.

Through their effort and dedication, it was possible to put the Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Unit up and running in September 2005, through fundraising, such as the annual event Mamamarathon, XXI Health Program and community support. a partnership was established with the Algarve Regional Health Administration to carry out the Breast Cancer Screening.

This unit has been visiting all the Algarve's Municipalities, in order to perform mammograms for women whose age is within the target group for this type of diagnosis (currently between 50 and 69).

He was the promoter and creator of the Algarve Radiotherapy Unit, inaugurated in 2006, with support from community funds (Interreg III-A) and municipal support.
