The Algarve Free Oil Movement (MALP) will organize a protest, on the 9th of February, at 17 pm, at the door of the Municipality of Loulé, against the recent authorization, by the Government, of the ENI/GALP borehole for prospecting and offshore oil exploration off Aljezur.

One of the objectives of the MALP protest is to understand «what Vítor Aleixo, who is chairman of the standing committee of the Regional Council of the Regional Coordination and Development Commission of the Algarve, thinks about this decision», and the protesters will pour «a bottle with a black liquid' at the PS Louletano seat door.

This action will have the symbolism of being a response to the «contempt and total lack of respect with which the Government of António Costa treated the citizens of the Algarve with this decision», according to MALP.

This movement of citizens also wants to know from the socialist mayor «what is worth a public consultation in Portugal». referring to the process that ran from May 24th to August 3rd, and where "more than 40 people" said no to oil exploration in Aljezur, against 4 votes in favour.

The truth is that the Government's decision to authorize the ENI/GALP scoop also has the opposition of the socialist mayors, as was expressed in the communiqué from the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (AMAL), which brings together the 16 mayors of the Algarve.

Clearer was the socialist José Amarelinho, president of the Aljezur Chamber, who yesterday spoke out against the decision, saying that the government has a “moral, legal and political imperative” to cancel ENI/GALP's authorization of the hole.
