Ana Cabecinha, an athlete from Clube Oriental de Pechão (COP), and Jorge Varela, from Areias de São João, renewed their regional champion titles absolute cross country, in a race that took place this Sunday, February 12th, in the “Pinheiros de Marim”, in Olhão.

The Portuguese Olympic marcher finished the women's race, of about 5 kilometers, in 18 minutes and 21 seconds. In males, the athlete from Albufeirense managed to complete the race of about 7 kilometers in 23 minutes and 21 seconds.

In second place in the women's competition was Ana Dias, from Areias São João, followed by Edna Barros, from the COP. Among men, the second and third place were two athletes from Areias de São João, Manuel Ferraz and Paulo Soares.

The history of the last edition of the Regional Championship of Corta-Mato was also repeated in what concerns the collective classification. Areias de São João and Clube Oriental de Pechão once again divided the “patrimony”, winning the male and female competition, respectively.

In youth and juniors, by teams, there was a dominance of Clube Oriental de Pechão, which won the four titles in dispute.

In individual terms, Eva Bento, from Areias São João, and Etson Barros, from the COP, won in youth, while, in juniors, the winners were Carolina Costa, from the COP, and Tiago Moreira, from the Bela Vista team.

On the same day, the regional tournament for the levels of Benjamins, children and initiates took place. By teams, the Clube Oriental de Pechão won three of the six titles in dispute: in male benjamins, female initiates and male initiates. Associação Académica Bela Vista won in women's benjamins and children's and São Francisco Associação Desportiva won in men's children.

Individually, the winners were Lara Martins, from Núcleo Sportinguista de Faro, and Rodrigo Estrela, from the COP, in benjamins; Lara Castro, from Bela Vista, and Marco Nobre, from Associação Caboverdianos, in children, and Ana Catarina Mestre, from COP, and Manuel Casado, from Centro Desportivo de Quarteira, in beginners.

The 2017 Regional Championship was marked by the absence "of many participants" due to "the great weather" that was felt in the Algarve the day before (11th), according to Clube Oriental de Pechão, which organized the competition.

The competition had the support of the Municipality of Olhão, the Parish Councils of Pechão, Quelfes and Olhão, the Arbitration Council of the Algarve Athletics Association, the Union of Bank Workers of the South and Islands, Lusitânia – Seguros, of Line Star Life, Disofrio, Visacar, and local businesses.
