Successful research works and projects to promote and support local and territorial development can be eligible to win the “International Prize for Local Development”, whose application period runs until 15 April.

This award aims to “encourage academics, specialists, young researchers, public institutions, private actors and companies to strengthen the attention they devote to territorial development policies, to the instruments and processes of analysis and to improve the capacity for diagnosis, comparing them in terms of internationals”, according to the University of Algarve, which is one of the promoters of the award, through its Research Center on Space and Organizations (CIEO), together with the Center for Social Studies (CES) of the University of Coimbra and the Research Center on the Internationalization of Local Economies (CRIEL) of the University of Insubria (Italy).

It was, moreover, in this last institution that the idea of awarding this award was born, which is now in its 4th edition. The initiative came from Professor Gioacchino Garofoli of the University of Insubria, «a renowned regional economist and one of the great promoters of the international resurgence of studies on industrial districts and local productive systems in the 1990s».

“Award submissions are divided into four main sections. The following may apply: researchers and/or specialists who have produced a relevant essay published in the last three years; young researchers who have completed and discussed their doctoral thesis in the last three years; territories that stand out for innovative actions, essential for their economic and social transformation; and companies, singular or associated, that lead their way in a logic of territorial responsibility», explained the Algarve university.

Complete information on how to submit applications can be found on the initiative's website., or requested by email from Hugo Pinto, responsible researcher, [email protected].
