«The art of the tinsmith» is the name of the project that wants to reactivate this craft «which is practically extinct in the Algarve».

To this end, from March to May, this initiative, which belongs to TASA – Técnicas Ancestralis Soluções Atual -, will take place in Silves, with the aim of training new tinsmiths.

This project will have training carried out «in the model of transmission of master-apprentice knowledge, centered on the domain of traditional technique and on the integration of new approaches using innovation», as explained by TASA.

In this sense, the initiative will have actions of community involvement, documental registration and development of products that incorporate solutions for design and innovation. «The art of the tinsmith» will thus give rise to new tin making products «created in the culture of design, in order to guarantee the permanence of tradition adapted to the tastes and needs of the current market».

The commitment to education will be made through the involvement of schools in the municipality of Silves, making known the tradition of tin making, raising awareness of the importance of preserving the territory's intangible heritage and demonstrating the creative potential inherent in traditional crafts.

Still, this is a project that also wants to reach the rest of the community, providing creative experiences for residents and visitors to get in touch with the basic techniques of the process. Thus, an exhibition will be promoted to present the work developed under the project and a conversation with institutions, technicians and participants about the future of the activity.

«The promotion of this expressive art of the Algarve's heritage will involve the making of a short film showing its potential for creativity and development of new cultural and economic initiatives», adds the TASA project.

This training will have a total duration of 125 hours. Applications are available here

The Municipality of Silves and the Parish Council of São Bartolomeu de Messines are partners in this initiative, which also has the support of EDP, being one of the nine Portuguese popular culture projects that won the 2nd edition of the Traditions Programme.
