Between January 1st and December 31st, 2016, 31 people died on the roads of the Algarve, according to the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR). The number of fatalities has decreased compared to 2015 (37), although the number of accidents has increased.

Over the past year, there were 10 241 accidents in the Algarve, 751 more than in 2015. This result places the district of Faro in fourth place, at national level, in number of accidents. Lisbon (26 869), Porto (23 598) and Braga (10 748) occupy the “top-3”.

In terms of the number of deaths, the Algarve is only surpassed by the districts of Lisbon (57), Porto (47) and Aveiro (43).

In Portugal, last year, there were 127 accidents, with the Algarve being responsible for 210% of this total.

The data on road accidents in the Algarve, in 2016, followed the trend at national level: more accidents, but with less seriousness, as the number of deaths and the number of serious injuries decreased.

In 2016, 158 people were seriously injured in road accidents in the region, 9 fewer than the previous year.

2017 did not start well and, in the first week of the year, there was a fatality to be registered in the Algarve, according to ANSR. This Tuesday, two more people lost their lives in an accident on the EN2.
