The exhibition «The Return of the Object: Art of the 1980s», at the Serralves Museum, will head towards Faro and can be seen from Thursday until February 19th at the Municipal Museum of Faro.

The exhibition brings together works by various artists, including Xana, who has long lived in the Algarve, but also by Rui Aguiar, Gerardo Burmester, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Rui Chafes, Harald Klingelhöller and Rui Sanches.

This exhibition reaches Faro within the scope of a partnership established between the Algarve municipality and the Serralves Foundation, which will allow exhibitions bearing the latter's seal to be held in the Algarve capital. The agreement grants the Faro local authority privileged conditions in the acquisition of exhibitions with the Serralves seal.

This exhibition is part of the Serralves Museum's traveling exhibition program, whose main objective is to «make the Serralves contemporary art collection accessible beyond the Museum's doors, thus allowing the expansion of the access network and bringing people closer to art. and to culture”, according to that entity.

«The Return of the Object: Art of the 1980s presents a selection of sculptures and paintings by seven Portuguese and international artists who solidified their artistic discourses in the 1980s. These works mark a reaction to the predominance of minimal and conceptual art in previous decades, through from the return to painting and sculpture and the use of traditional materials such as iron, bronze and wood», according to the Serralves Museum.

«We are witnessing a return to classic themes of art history, the resurgence of a figurative and metaphorical imagery associated with poetic and evocative titles and a proximity to the decorative arts and popular culture. This diversity is related to the beginning of globalization, which puts very different cultures in contact and mutual influence», he added.

This exhibition will give the Algarve public «an opportunity to revisit the artistic production of the 1980s which, representing the end of the isolation to which the dictatorship had voted Portugal, reveals a growing synchronism with the international artistic context», concluded the Serralves Museum.
