Oil clarification session Faro_3The Climáximo movement welcomes, in a statement, «the cancellation of the contracts of Portfuel and Repsol /Partex in the Algarve», but points out that «there are 9 more contracts for the exploration of oil and gas, on land and at sea, across the Portuguese coast from Porto to Sagres, and in Batalha and in Pombal».

The movement argues that "it is necessary to cancel all these contracts and immediately move towards the end of the use of fossils in the country, in line with what is happening in several other places on the planet".

Climáximo emphasizes that «these cancellations would not have been possible without the determined and uninterrupted mobilization of various local movements, in the Algarve and beyond, which put the question of oil and gas in total clarity in opposition to the lives and economy of the populations. the obvious issue of climate change that threatens not only on a local scale, but on a global scale”.

The movement considers that “the government's decision is positive, but at no time will it be acceptable as a bargaining chip for the pursuit of other concessions: we are not mistaken about the strength of the companies that have these catastrophic concessions, but it is the duty of any government to defend the populations that elected him».

Therefore, he stresses, it is still necessary to "cancel the remaining contracts, on the Alentejo coast, in the West zone and in Beira Litoral"

Climáximo is a movement for climate justice that has been involved since its foundation in combating the prospecting and exploitation of fossil fuels in Portugal and in all other countries.
