cork oaksQuercus and Corticeira Amorim are contributing, through the “Green Cork/Common Forest” project, to the densification of cork oak forests at Quinta da Barroca in Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Mora, in the parish of Pavia, in the municipality of Mora.

The action took place this Saturday, November 12, with the participation of around 80 volunteers from Corticeira Amorim and with the support of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Mora. In this densification project, 2.000 cork oaks were planted, in a total area of about four hectares.

Promoted by volunteers from Corticeira Amorim, under the company's Natural Choice Program and in the light of Quercus' “Green Cork/Common Forest” project, this new reforestation will result in a total of 15.500 native trees planted in Portugal, especially cork oaks, since 2011 .

As usual, the cork oaks were donated by the Common Forest Project, but this time the planting will take place in the Alentejo region, one of the areas of the country where there is a large patch of cork oak forests and where that, which is the National Tree of Portugal , finds ideal conditions for survival.

Portugal is the world leader in terms of the area of cork oak forests, which are distributed throughout the Western Mediterranean Basin and which play a very relevant role in terms of CO2 retention (recent studies point to an absorption capacity that can reach 14,7 tons per hectare/year), in the regulation of the hydrological cycle, and simultaneously promote a biodiversity of similar importance to regions such as the Amazon, Borneo or the African savannah.

Corticeira Amorim has been a partner in the “Green Cork/Floresta Comum” project since the launch of the initiative, supported by the proceeds from the Green Cork stopper recycling program, which fully revert to financing the preservation of the Portuguese autochthonous forest.

Quercus intends with the project “Green Cork / Common Forest” to encourage the recycling of cork stoppers and reforestation with native Portuguese species.

The objective is to promote and encourage the creation of a forest with high levels of biodiversity and production of ecological services, bringing knowledge and trees to people and institutions that are willing and willing to intervene.
