diabetesPortimão, Silves and Lagos will mark World Diabetes Day, which is celebrated tomorrow, November 14, with screenings in the three municipalities, or the presentation of the «Diabetes na Serra» project, in São Marcos da Serra.

After the first screening, at the Santo Amaro Market, in Lagos, and the «Walk for Health», this Sunday, the next initiative takes place tomorrow, the 14th, with a screening at the Hospital Unit of Portimão, between 9:00 am and 12:00, at hall of the External Consultation.

«Still on the same day, but in a more professional-oriented approach, the cafeteria at the Portimão unit offers a blue menu, consisting of soup, main course and dessert suited to the specifics of the diet for people with diabetes», says Centro Hospital do Algarve .

«Through the methodology findrisk, health professionals will fill out a questionnaire, perform a physical assessment and other parameters, such as capillary blood glucose or blood pressure, in order to detect users who are at high or very high risk of developing diabetes in the next 10 years and, if necessary, make your referral to the health services», explains CHAlgarve.

In São Marcos da Serra, the presentation of the project «Diabetes na Serra» starts at 10:30 am, at the local Parish Council. This project “intends to improve the accessibility and quality of health care and promote adequate surveillance among the elderly population with diabetes”, says the Câmara de Silves.

The activity will be followed by an action to raise awareness of the need to adopt healthy eating, ending with a session of physical activity, at 11:30 am.

This initiative, which is carried out in partnership with UCC Rio Arade, is aimed at the general population, with each participant wearing a white or blue blouse, colors associated with the anniversary.

Diabetes affects about 366 million people worldwide and about 1 million Portuguese (12,4% of the population), with Portugal being the country in Western Europe with the highest prevalence of the disease.

Considering that this is a silent disease, its prevention, for those who have one or more of these risk factors but do not have a diagnosis of the disease, involves the adoption of a healthier lifestyle and medical follow-up.
