Church of Santa Maria_Tavira“Consequences of the 1755 Earthquake in the Termo de Tavira” is the theme of the lecture scheduled for Saturday, November 5, at 10:30 am, at the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, under the guidance of art historian Marco Sousa Santos.

On the morning of November 1, 1755, the Algarve was shaken by the most violent earthquake historically recorded in the region.

It is a known fact that no village in the Algarve has escaped the effects of this earthquake unscathed, but what effects, specifically, did the phenomenon produce in the city of Tavira and in the parishes at its end?

What do the testimonies of the time tell us about the number of victims registered in the municipality, the damage caused to its buildings and the consequences of the cataclysm in the following days, weeks and months?

These matters will be under analysis in one of the Tavirense temples most affected by the 1755 earthquake.

This session of “Walks in the History of Tavira” intends to give some answers about the evolution of scientific studies on this topic in a simple and decoded way.

The cycle “Walks in the History of Tavira” aims to make known the city's past, the urban landscape, monuments and historical characters, as well as raising awareness of the need to protect and enhance the heritage heritage.

Registration is free and mandatory and is intended for the general public (maximum number of 50 participants).

Interested parties should fill in the registration form and send it to the Educational Service of the Municipal Museum of Tavira, via e-mail [email protected] or deliver it to the reception of the Municipal Museum of Tavira – Palácio da Galeria (Tuesday- Monday to Saturday, 09:00 am to 16:30 pm). More information can be obtained by calling 281320500 (ext. 2308/9).

Marco Sousa Santos has a degree in Cultural Heritage and a Master in Art History from the University of Algarve.

He is the author of several publications dealing with themes related to the religious architecture of the Modern Age and the history and heritage of the Algarve.

In 2015, he was one of the winners of the 1st edition of the António Rosa Mendes National Historical Essay Award.
