Last week, the Mayor of Lagos Maria Joaquina Matos received a delegation led by the Deputy Secretary of State and Internal Administration Isabel Oneto to talk about the new generation of Local Security Contracts (CLS).

According to Isabel Oneto, this new model and the new generation of Local Security Contracts is to advance in the Algarve «as soon as possible». The purpose of these is "to change the paradigm of the Municipal Security Councils a little" as the Council argues that "what is specifically needed in the region is to continue to reduce crime levels, which in themselves are, here, fortunately very low».

For Isabel Oneto, «since it is not necessary to implement specific measures, the work in Lagos involves creating, or maintaining, a set of mechanisms to operationalize and articulate matters in this area». This articulation already exists between the municipality and the PSP and GNR of Lagos, according to both those responsible for the respective security forces present at the meeting.

This Local Security Contract in Lagos will be part of the MAI Municipality (where all municipalities in the Algarve are located), and there is also the MAI Bairro and MAI Cidadão component for other municipalities in the country.

On this visit to Lagos, other issues related to crime in the municipality were also addressed, such as the conditions in which the National Republican Guard and the Public Security Police carry out their proximity inspection «which, in Lagos, has translated into a crime rate almost non-existent, as well as on the projects «Escola Segura» and «Growing up in safety», which have been a success in the municipality», says the Municipality of Lagos.

Visit WorkThe summer issue was also brought to the table, referring that Lagos is one of the Algarve's municipalities that triples its population, and the mayor of the municipality expressed her appreciation for the reinforcement of the troops and the expansion of the GNR body, the which contributed to not recording major occurrences.

The Mayor also took advantage of this visit by a member of the Government to insist on "the urgent need to advance the work of rehabilitation of the Multifunções Building, located in Chinicato, so that the GNR can, as soon as possible, start operating there" , recalling in this regard that “they are currently installed in an old convent without the minimum conditions for the performance of their functions”.

The Deputy Secretary of State and Internal Administration committed to completing the works by July 2017.

At the end of the meeting, a visit was finally made to the premises of the Public Security Police, equipment inaugurated on 27 October 2010, which is located at one of the entrances to Lagos.
