Work on the former EB1 + JI No. 3 School in Lagos, now called Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Basic School, has already started after the contract was signed last week. The work costs nearly 1 million euros and lasts, according to information from the local authority, five months.

In 2005, there was already an intervention at the school, but which, according to the City Council of Lagos, «only allowed the addition of new spaces and facilities: cafeteria, library, computer room and sanitary facilities, through the construction of a new building without, however, requalifying the old building'.

According to the municipal executive, it was “time to look at the school as a whole and requalify it, covering the old building, the new building and the outdoor spaces (recreation)”.

These improvements were explained on the spot, as part of a visit to the school where, in addition to the executive, the Regional Delegate for Education of the Algarve Francisco Marques, the person responsible for the project, the architect Vítor Vilhena and several technicians from the municipality were present.

Regarding the change of name, the Mayor of Lagos Maria Joaquina Bastos said she wants to “bring comfort, security, well-being, joy and also a little inspiration and poetry, through the work and words of someone who discovered and was enchanted by the beauty of Lagos: Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, one of the greatest exponents of literature and poetry written in Portuguese».

This change in name was validated by the Gil Eanes Schools Group, by the Municipal Council of Education and authorized by the Ministry of Education.

The works, which have the exact value of 888.501,47 euros, plus VAT, are under the responsibility of Martins Gago & Filhos, Lda, and the Câmara de Lagos is trying to obtain financing of up to 50% for the work, within the scope of the community framework. CRESC Algarve 2020.
