accordionistsThe Algarve accordionists João Filipe Guerreiro, Francisco Monteiro and Hugo Madeira shined in the 66th edition of the World Accordion Trophy, which took place between 26 September and 2 October in Portimão. Hugo Madeira was crowned world champion and Francisco Monteiro and João Filipe Guerreiro were runners-up in the categories in which they competed.

Hugo Madeira, 9-year-old accordion player, born in Altura, in Castro Marim, a student of Professor João Pereira, was crowned world champion in the “Trophy National Under 10” category.

João Filipe Guerreiro, from Montenegro, in the municipality of Faro, student of Hermenegildo Guerreiro, revalidated the status of vice-champion of the world in the Senior Varieté category.

Francisco Monteiro, from Portimão, a student of Gonçalo Pescada, was also in 2nd place, but in the “Trophy National under-17” category.

According to Mito Algarvio – Association of Accordion Players of the Algarve, the World Accordion Trophy, promoted by the “Confédération Mondiale de l'Accordéon” and hosted this year by the Lagos Music Academy, «is considered one of the most important and demanding world competitions in this musical area, having participated in it more than a hundred participants representing 26 countries».
