Castro MarimA plane crash on Alagoa beach, in Altura, and a landslide in Castro Marim Castle, following the Medieval Days, will be simulated this weekend. The two simulations are part of an intensive course of action in emergency and catastrophe that began today in the village of Castro.

The first simulacrum – the fall of an aircraft, in midsummer, on Alagoa beach – is scheduled for this Saturday at 17:30 pm and the second, at Castro Marim Castle, for Sunday at 9:30 am.

The initiative is promoted by a finalist student of the medicine course, born in Altura and the objective is to «prepare the trainees, coming from different training and performance areas, and the entities involved for a possible eventuality».

The drills are preceded by a seminar, with Portuguese and international speakers, which will focus on training in medical emergencies and disasters. Topics such as coordination and command, the START triage system, psychosocial intervention in crisis, legitimate defense in a hostile environment, social communication and Portuguese sign language in a pre-hospital environment will also be addressed.

«Disaster situations and multi-victim accidents are a reality in today's world and the theoretical and practical preparation of health professionals is necessary so that they can make a difference, if it becomes a real situation. We must be prepared and trained to act in a catastrophe and this training is extremely important», considers the student of Medicine, Verónica Sofia.

In the opening session, the doctor and mayor of Castro Marim Francisco Amaral, declared that “in Portugal, we often only remember Santa Barbara when it thunders, a very special thanks to our townsman Verónica, who is the soul of this course and which the municipality is very happy to support».

The initiative is organized by the Altura Martial Arts Club and has the support and collaboration of the Castro Marim City Council.
