«Southern Writings» FestivalConferences, round tables, workshops, residencies and artistic performances, concerts, theatre, conversations with writers, exhibition of Portuguese-speaking literature, book presentations, short story sessions are the main ingredients of the first edition of the «Escritas do Sul» Festival, which takes place from the 5th to the 9th of October, in Almodôvar.

What intends to be a «Portuguese Language Festival» will bring, over five days, «something innovative to our region, celebrating our language in its most diverse expressions and aspects», explains the Almodôvar City Council, which promotes this literary festival.

The municipality of this municipality of Baixo Alentejo presents «Escritas do Sul» as «an “inclusive” festival, as the population group that has hearing, visual or motor difficulties will be the target of special attention».

It is because the activities that will be carried out, «will be accompanied by audio-descriptive and visual interpretation».

Accessibility to public buildings, by people with reduced mobility, will also be ensured, since the Municipality of Almodôvar “wants that everyone, without exception, be included in this authentic cultural marathon that we are going to promote”.

And why such a festival in a locality in the interior of Alentejo? «It makes perfect sense to hold this festival in Almodôvar, as the event celebrates, at the same time, the importance that writing has had in our territory for 2500 years, namely the “Writing of the Southwest”», explains the municipality.

The program includes the presentation of books, starting on the 6th, at 17 pm, with the presentation of «Diogo Piçarra Em Pessoa», followed, half an hour later, by «Crónicas de uma Travessia», by Luís Cardoso de Noronha. On the 00th, it will be Pedro Chagas Freitas' turn to present «I promise to lose». All these book launches will take place in the forecourt of the renovated Nossa Senhora da Conceição Convent.

But the program of the Festival «Escritas do Sul» also includes concerts, all with free entry and scheduled for Praça da República, which begin at the opening of the Festival, on 5 October, national holiday, at 17:30 pm, with Black Mamba.

On the 6th (22 pm), Capitão Fausto arrives, on the 00th (7 pm), João Gil invites Quinteto de Lisboa, Stewart Sukura and Nancy Vieira.
