Antonio Rosa MendesA re-edition of António Rosa Mendes' work “Olhão made itself” will be released by the publisher Sul, Sol e Sal on Saturday, at 18:00, at the publishing house's premises, located at Rua Vasco da Gama, in Olhão. The presentation of the work will be in charge of university professor Joaquim Romero de Magalhães.

The ceremony will also serve to announce the new projects of this Algarve publisher. For now, Sul, Sol e Sal is once again publishing a work by the late António Rosa Mendes, a professor at the University of Algarve and “an eminent historian”, according to the publisher.

In “Olhão made itself”, Rosa Mendes “had the unique ability to understand the essence of a place in its multiple dimensions and to interpret like no one else the characteristics that individualize the territory and establish the identity traits of its people”.

«Backed by historical sources and a knowledge of the city's daily experiences, which will not be inconsiderate to withdraw from the judgment on the action and collective thinking of the community, the author dared in this study, as in no other so far, to emphasize the role of the people as an agent and engine of its own destiny. A position that confronted the discourse established until then and was embodied in a narrative that demarcates itself in the interpretation of the facts and causes that determined the genesis and emancipation of Olhão in relation to Faro. City from which the first fishermen who, in the early 1600s, came out and “moved eastwards, settling by the well”», according to the South, Sol and Sal.

Reasons that led the publisher to bet on a new edition of the work. The history of the region will be, moreover, a bet of Sul, Sol e Sal, in the future.
