European Heritage Days invade the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo

Municipal Museum of Faro_01From spending a day with a shepherd, to staying overnight in a hermitage, to free visits to museums and monuments, shows and street performances, the European Heritage Days (JEP), which take place from 23 to 25 September, will fill the Algarve and the Baixo Alentejo of initiatives.

This year, with the theme “Communities and Culture”, the JEPs are promoted in Portugal by the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage, with the aim of making European citizens aware of the appreciation of Heritage.

In addition to the various Municipalities, the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve will also organize activities in the monuments under its jurisdiction, which, between 23 and 25 September, will have free entry.

Reservoir:
The municipality of Albufeira will celebrate the European Heritage Days at Municipal Museum of Archeology, on the 23rd, at 18 pm, with the activity “Musical Instruments – a better culture”.

This consists of the «presentation and demonstration of musical instruments, mostly constructed from reused materials and objects». For this there will be workshops and pedagogical workshops. The activity is open to the entire public.

Aljezur_01Aljezur:
O Historic Center of Aljezur it will stage the theatrical performance “The legend of Cássima and the Canto dos Mouros”, on the 24th, at 16 pm. This event is organized by the Regional Directorate of Culture, in partnership with the Ao Luar – Teatro group, which presents a work based on the work of Francisco Xavier de Ataíde de Oliveira.

Faro:
The capital of the Algarve will not let the initiative go unnoticed. On the 23rd – the first day of the European Heritage Days – the municipality will launch another edition of Proceedings of the Municipality, a magazine of the city's history and heritage, after five years of interregnum. This publication was founded by Pinheiro and Rosa in 1969, and the presentation of this new edition, whose director is Professor Joaquim Romero de Magalhães, takes place at 17:30 pm, at the António Ramos Rosa Municipal Library.

It follows, at 18:30 pm, at the Municipal Museum, the inauguration of the exhibition “Usava Chapéus como Mais Nobody (O)usava”, by Mariana Santos, which will make known the author's hat collection. As part of this exhibition, students from Escola Pinheiro e Rosa, from the Performing Arts course, will step in to recall the times when the hat was more than a fashion accessory.

In the evening, at 21 pm, the Museum is once again the center of attention, hosting a show of Alentejo sounds with Pedro Mestre and Campaniça Trio.

On September 24th, activities resume with the inauguration of a new exhibition at the Municipal Museum, scheduled for 18:30 pm. This time, the theme is archeology and the collection of earthenware discovered in the Historic Center, with examples ranging from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century.

A guided tour is scheduled for 21 pm, by Professor Francisco Lameira, to the Warrior Palace, a revivalist building with neoclassical influences. Known as Palácio Guerreirinho, it currently belongs to the Ministry of the Army and works as an officers' mess. At the end of the visit, there will also be a place for a musical performance by fado singer Luís Manhita.

the council of Faro there will also be an activity in the Roman Ruins of Milreu, promoted by the Regional Directorate of Culture, within the scope of the Program for the Disclosure and Enhancement of the Heritage of the Algarve (DiVaM), to be held on 25 September, from 15:00 to 18:30.

“From knowledge to well-being: a new Roman bioexperience” will have activities related to the exploration of techniques for the use and knowledge of local natural resources from the Roman period. For this event it is necessary to register by email [email protected]

 

Lagoon:
Lagoa will have two activities within the scope of the European Heritage Days. During the three days of the JEP, from 14 pm to 00 pm, it will be possible to take guided tours of the Farol of Alfanzina, in Carvoeiro. The objective is to know the history and observe the activity of a farol. Visits are open to the entire public, although limited to the capacity of the farol.

Outside the dates of the European Heritage Days, but linked to the theme, on September 30, at 17:30 pm, at Convent of St. Joseph, there will be a series of conferences and seminars. The program includes a lecture on “The Mediterranean food identity of Lagoa”, by Maria Manuel Valagão, or an initiative of showcooking by chef Bertílio Gomes. Admission is free.

 

Lagos:
The municipality of Lagos will host five activities within the scope of the European Heritage Days. On September 23, there will be guided tours of the Dr. José Forminho Museum, at 10:30 and 14:30. This initiative aims to make known the Municipal Museum and the Church of Santo António, highlighting their role in the meeting of cultures, witnessed in collections of various origins.

On the 24th, also at the Museum, there will be the inauguration of the temporary photography exhibition “Retrospective”, by Alexandre Manuel, at 17:30 pm. The exhibition will be open until December 31st.

Also on the 24th, but at 21 pm, the St. Anthony Church it will host a classical music concert, promoted by the Academy of Music of Lagos.

On the 25th, the Slave Market and the Slavery Route Museum have guided tours at 10:30 and 14:30. With the name “Lagos on the Slave Route”, this initiative aims to make known, in a route between the Slave Market, the Riverfront Front and Vila Adentro, the village of Lagos in the time of Infante D. Henrique.

Finally, during the three days of the European Heritage Days, it will be possible to visit some of the city's monuments for free: the Museum and Church of Santo António, the Slave Market and Fort Ponta da Bandeira. On the 23rd and 24th, between 10 am and 00 pm and 13 pm and 00 pm, you can visit the Armazém do Espingardeiro.

Still within the scope of the JEP, but outside the main days of activities, this Saturday, September 17, from 15:30 to 18:30, the Hall of the Paços do Concelho Building will host a debate on the theme “Culture, Heritage and Museology".

The speakers for this debate will be Cláudio Torres, director of the Mértola Archaeological Field, João Serra, former president of the Fundação Cidade de Guimarães, and José Gameiro, scientific director of the Museu de Portimão.

The debate is moderated by Nuno Joel, finalist in the course on Cultural Heritage and Archeology at the University of Algarve.

 

Water Museum Pole in Querença CMLoulé MiraLoulé:
The first activity of the JEPs to be carried out in the municipality of Loulé is in the Water Museum Center and EB1 school and Kindergarten, both in want, on the 23rd, from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. The event “Bracket Modeling Workshop” includes pedagogical workshops and workshops dedicated to the culture of water and associated with the life of vegetable gardens and their importance in rural communities.

The children will also have the opportunity to get to know the daughters-in-law and how they work and then model small buckets like those that used to be found in these structures.

Already Cândido Guerreiro and Condes de Alte Museum Center receives, also on the 23rd of September, at 15 pm, the event “Alte by the window of time…”. This will consist of the projection of existing photographs in the digital archive of the Polo Museológico de Alte, to identify the people who are part of the images and to capture memories of the community and its culture.

At 18:00 pm, at the Loulé Municipal Museum, an application will be presented with animations of objects on display at the museum.

For the 24th, an initiative in the Loulé Castle, at 16 pm, promoted by the Regional Directorate of Culture (DiVaM), in partnership with the association Fungo Azul: “Sons da Palavra”, with traditional Algarve legends and tales presented by Nelda Magalhães, accompanied by the sounds of old instruments.

 

Odemira:
The municipality of Odemira, in Alentejo, will celebrate the European Heritage Days with three activities: the first is the possibility of taking a guided tour of the city on the 23rd, 24th and 25th, from 14 pm to 00 pm FaroXNUMX of Cape Sardão.

O Channel Gate there will also be guided tours, but only on the 23rd and 24th, at 14:30 pm and 16:30 pm, respectively. The visit will be guided by fishermen and the objective is to visit Portinho do Canal, bringing the public closer to the fishing community and the riverside culture of Vila Nova de Milfontes.

 

Look:
Olhão will have, during the three days of the JEP, from 14:00 to 17:00, guided tours of the FaroXNUMX of Cape Santa Maria, on the island of Culatra. The objective is to know the history and observe the activity of a farol.

 

musselPortimao:
the village of Big Mexilhoeira, in the interior of the municipality of Portimão, will receive on Saturday 24th, from 14 pm to 00 pm, the initiative “Mexilhoeira Grande – Our culture goes out into the street”, organized by the Museum of Portimão and the Parish Council. 

The churchyard of the Igreja Matriz and the streets of the village will receive a program that “will allow visitors, through an exhibition and conversations with the protagonists of the main activities of a traditional rural nature in the parish, to discover or revisit the arts, knowledge and flavors that have marked the daily life of several generations», says the Portimão Town Council.

The highlights will be gastronomy, with milling and bread, local sweets, medronho, honey, among other products, handicraft, with enterprise, wicker, cork, atabua, lace and cork, as well as agriculture and seafood and also beliefs, with mezinhas and prayers.

The monkey, the spinning top, the marble, the donkey game or the botica handkerchief are some of the examples of traditional games that visitors can share with the family.

The program of the initiative “Mexilhoeira Grande – Our culture goes out into the street” also offers various activities, including earth building workshops, ceramic painting with pigments, necklaces on rags, environmental games or workshops on kneading bread and agriculture.

At 15:30 pm, a guided tour through the streets of Mexilhoeira is scheduled, to discover its history and ways of life, which requires registration to be carried out on the same day.

At 16:30 pm, the musical entertainment takes place with the participation of concert artists, the Rancho Folclórico da Figueira and the singing group Estrelas do Barlavento.

The film made by the Portimão Museum about “Mexilhoeira Knowledge and Experiences” will be screened at 18:00 pm, followed by “Hands to the Work” at 18:30 pm, a workshop on the confection of fig-based sweets, whose participation also requires registration to be carried out on the same day.

This year, one of the novelties will be an area dedicated to the “Natural Heritage of this Land”, promoted in collaboration with the association A Rocha, with a view to the dissemination of the local natural heritage.

“Comidinhas da Terra” is another proposal that debuts in the 4th edition of the initiative, in which several restaurants in the village (A Curva, A Oficina, Adega Vila Lisa, Dream Snack-bar and Mexilhoeira-Grande Futebol Clube) propose, from from 19pm, some local snacks at a symbolic price.

Recreating the tradition of the corn husking and threshing party is one of the highlights of this event and is scheduled for 21 pm. This activity takes place to the sound of the Adágio choir, as well as the concertinas from Mexico.

 

Sao Bras de Alportel:
O Historical Center São Brás de Alportel will host, on the 24th, from 10:00 am to 16:00 pm, the activity “(a)Risk the Heritage”, which will have fun workshops and workshops. The event is aimed at the general public.

 

Castle of Silves_palace of balconiesSilves:
The Municipality of Silves will have activities during the three days of the European Heritage Days. The first will be on the 23rd, at 10:00 am and 15:00 pm, at Castle, entitled “Conserving Past Cultures”. The work being carried out by the Conservation and Restoration Service on the Almohad structures of the Castle of Silves will be made known.

The restoration techniques and procedures applied to this type of monument will also be addressed. The initiative will be complemented by an accompanied visit to “The Palatine Dwellings”.

On the 24th, the morning starts early for those who want to accompany a shepherd and his flock during the day. Scheduled for 8:00 am, at Messines gate, the activity “A day with the shepherd” aims to make known the ancestral art of pastoralism. This activity is limited to six participants and entries must be made to [email protected].

Still on the 24th, but at 16 pm, the Municipal Museum of Archeology will receive the conference “The Bishop's Library of the Algarve in 1596 and Incorporated into the Bodleian Library, Oxford, England, in the year 1602“. The lecture will be given by José António de Jesus Martins and wants to make known the title project, whose central theme focuses on the figure of Bishop D. Fernando Martins Mascarenhas and his library, looted in 1596 by the Count of Essex.

Finally, Silves will have the activity “Where and How the Medieval Communities of Silves Lived”, which will tour the city, starting at 10:00 am on the 25th. This initiative will visit the sites of Silves urban area where the communities of the past lived. Based on historical sources, the places where Jews, Muslims and Christians lived during the Middle Ages will be visited.

Tavira:
The municipality of Tavira will receive two initiatives within the scope of the European Heritage Days. On the 23rd, at 18 pm, the Islamic Nucleus of the Museum of Tavira open the exhibition "Blue. Islamic Treasures of Uzbekistan”, by photographer Luís Reina. It is a journey through the architecture and civil, military and religious art of this Central Asian country, «uncovering a heritage built over the centuries, by skilful and meticulous hands, which embroidered monuments in shades of blue in silk threads» .

On the 24th, at 10:30 am, it will be possible to take a guided tour of the SAAL district, in Cabanas de Tavira, in order to address the experiences of the fishing community in the parish of Cabanas and, simultaneously, the process of building the SAAL neighborhood (Local Ambulatory Support Service), in the 70s, after the 25th of April 1974.

 

Fortress of Sagres6Bishop's Village:
The municipality of Vila do Bispo will host several activities during the European Heritage Days. On the 23rd, at 10:00 am, the Sagres fortress will host the “Inspiritum” project.

This activity is promoted by the Regional Directorate of Culture (under the DiVaM program) and will have a journey of discovery, with interactive pedagogical activities with a dramatic and creative movement, which unveil fantastic stories of spirits, legends, apparitions and other magical beings and of the universe of Portuguese oral narration and the Algarve's ideals, with Nelda Magalhães and Bruno Batista.

On the 24th and 25th, from 18:00 pm to 8:00 am, the activity “Fantastic Nights between Land and Sea", during which it will be possible to stay overnight in the Hermitage of Guadalupand. This initiative is also part of the DiVaM program and will feature activities such as walking routes, scenic performances, musicals and traditional cuisine. On the 25th, at 17 pm, also in Guadeloupe, there will be “The Miracle of the Black Virgin” – a theater and music show by Ana Cristina Oliveira, with music by the Al-Fanfare group, also promoted by the Regional Directorate of Culture.

On the 24th, the Vila do Bispo Interpretation Center will host the opening of the exhibition “The Prehistoric Origins of the Kingdom of Algarves”, from 15:00 to 19:00, followed by a 6-kilometre walking tour along the Monte dos Amantes Megalithic Route.

Patent until September 24th, the exhibition “Pilgrimage. From the panels of São Vicente de Fora” it is also integrated in the JEPs. The exhibition/intervention is by Ana Celorico Machado, Christoph Rumpf, Bettina Semmer, Joana Villaverde and Pedro Leitão, and can be visited until 20 pm at the Sagres fortress.

Na Hermitage of Guadeloupe, until October 1st it will be possible to visit the exhibition “Transmutations”, by Milita Doré, from 10:30 am to 13:00 pm and from 14:00 pm to 18:30 pm.

Finally, during the three days of the JEP the FaroXNUMX of Cape St. Vincent it will be open for guided tours from 14 pm to 00 pm.

 

Vila Real de Santo António:
Vila Real de Santo António will also be one of the Municipalities that will promote initiatives within the scope of the European Heritage Days. On the 24th, the village of Santa Rita, in Vila Nova de Cacela, will have pedagogical workshops and workshops. that will join the traditional with the contemporary. The initiative is called ““Eu Sei, Tu Sabes, We do: Between the traditional and the contemporary” and intends to be an exchange of knowledge and practices with the community of Cacela.

On the 25th, in old cacelle, there will be the “Exchange Market”, from 10:00 am to 17:00 pm, where goods or services will be exchanged directly without resorting to money. The objective is to make the population aware of this type of alternative market. The activity ends with a walk and olive picking.

During the three days of the European Heritage Days, the Farol of Vila Real Santo António it will be open for guided tours from 14 pm to 00 pm.
