Francisco Amaral will be re-candidate for mayor of Castro Marim in the 2017 Municipal Elections. In an interview with Sul Informação, the mayor from Castromarinense said that he has already made the decision, that he trusts that he will be supported by the leadership of the PSD, the party for which he was elected, and is not afraid of the "slanderous campaign" that he says he has been targeting for two years.
«The National Council of the PSD has already decided that the mayors are all re-candidates. So I end up having no doubt that I will have the support of the party to run for president of the municipality of Castro Marim. That is my will», guaranteed the mayor.
Francisco Amaral advances, regardless of the defamatory campaign that he claims to have been targeted for a long time. «In a cowardly way, I have been the target of a campaign for two years, which includes anonymous letters and communications, fake Facebook profiles and others. It is a daily campaign, without scruples, made by people without principles, without values and resorting to things from the arch of the old woman, even unimaginable, which even reveal some psychopathy», according to the mayor, the dean of Portuguese mayors.
“I never thought this was possible. In all the years I was a mayor, I've never seen anything like it, at least here in the Algarve. It is a campaign of psychological terrorism», he considered.
For the mayor, these attacks "are internal", that is, they come from elements of the local PSD itself, but not only. “Over the years, I have always noticed that there was a constant war between the PSD and the PS, here in Castro Marim. When I arrived, I introduced a new way of doing politics, without wars, hatreds or enmities. Most people have realized this, but there are half a dozen factionals, both on one side and the other, who feed on the war, and who don't like it. But I'm convinced that there are no more than half a dozen people», he said.
Although he does not hide his discomfort for the situation, Francisco Amaral does not question the re-candidacy, because he believes that the "overwhelming majority of the population" is on his side and because he needs "one more term" to complete what he started.
This is because the mayor's projects and ideas are many and touch many areas. Among them, there are more profound interventions that Francisco Amaral wants to carry out, such as the creation of a network of bicycle paths in the municipality, expanding the municipal water supply system, so that «there is no house in the municipality without drinking water», and the paving of roads, "which have become potholed over the years."
Francisco Amaral does not hide that, upon arriving at the Chamber of Castro Marim, after decades as mayor of Alcoutim, he found “a lot to do”. “The house was working at a pace that, in my opinion, was very slow. We have introduced a new dynamic and are counting on the collaboration of City Hall and municipal company officials. But I recognize that there were some vices, which I am trying to solve”, he illustrated.
This new philosophy was accepted by the «large majority of people» who work in the municipality, whose work and effort Francisco Amaral was keen to praise. But given the attacks it is being targeted, not everyone in Castro Marim seems to have accepted the new dynamic brought about by the new mayor.
“I admit that the changes I introduced may have led to this reaction. When changes are introduced, when breaks are made, there is always some resistance. I admit that this may be one of the origins», he said.
