European night of researchers 2016Watching the last mission of the Rosetta probe, which today is about to crash into a comet, or discovering how to observe the sun without burning your eyes are some of the proposals of the Ciência Viva Centers in Faro, Lagos and Tavira, which host today the European Researchers' Night, under the theme "What will life be like in 2030?" and considered the «largest science party in Europe».

This initiative "intends to break down the barriers that separate science from citizens and demystify the image of the scientist, as someone distant and inaccessible." All events are free entry.

Living Science Center FaroCentro Ciência Viva do Algarve (in Faro):

O Algarve Live Science Centre, located in Faro, presents, from 10:00 am to 19:30 pm, an exhibition of scientific visualization images from the activities of researchers participating in the afternoon session.

From 14:00 pm to 16:00 pm, there will be activities for schools related to these images on display, which will try to answer questions such as detecting the presence of conductive ions, how to highlight the conducting beams of flowers, how to see sound, with non-Newtonian fluids or how to see the sound, with chladni plates.

Questions such as what can UV radiation show us or how to observe the sun without burning our eyes will also be answered. For the younger ones, there will also be the construction of games with radiation filters.

From 16:00 pm to 18:30 pm, there is time for another game – the Who and What? – which will involve the audience present and the invited researchers with the aim of discovering what each researcher studies. The moderation will be in charge of Ana Paula Lopes.

Those who bring "their lunch" will have a moment of socializing at sunset, from 18:30 pm to 19:30 pm, on the roof terrace of the Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve. There will be a photograph with all participants.

From 19:30 pm to 22:00 pm, there will be a night astronomical observation with satellite hunting, with photography of the stars through telescope eyepieces and informal conversations with researchers in the area. Topics for conversation will be advances in space exploration and cosmology, artificial satellites and their future for Earth observation, and cosmic and solar winds.

The moderation will be Filipe Dias, responsible for astronomy at the Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve.

Tavira Living Science CenterTavira Living Science Center:

Throughout the day, it is possible to visit the Tavira Living Science Center and participate in all activities centered on the theme “The Garbage we don't see: from marine debris to space debris”.

The mission of the Rosetta spacecraft, which is making its last trip to the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov today, will be broadcast live at the Center.

There are also field trips to collect marine litter in the Gilão River estuary, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, and an observation of microplastics in the Coreto garden in Tavira, from 14:30 pm to 16:30 pm.

Early this Friday evening, the little ones will be able to participate in the workshop «Rockets in the air and 3D», from 20:00 pm to 21:30 pm, and challenge the force of gravity with the paper rockets built by them.

A Café com Ciência will also be hosted, from 21:00 pm to 23:00 pm, in which the theme of marine and space debris will be discussed and will be attended by several guest researchers, including Professor Manuel Paiva, retired from the Universidade Livre de Brussels and ESA and NASA researcher, who will also speak about the Rosetta mission, Carla Lourenço, researcher at the Center for Science of the Sea (CCMAR), PhD student at the University of Rhodes (South Africa) and founder of the environmental awareness project Straw Patrol

Lagos Live Science Center_15Viva Lagos Science Center:

This year, when the future is highlighted at the European Researchers' Night, the Lagos Living Science Center chose the «theme of cognitive improvement at a time when rapid technological advances enable new realities that need a broader discussion», explains the center.

Anchoring in the film “Sem Limites” (Neil Burguer, 2011), excerpts from the film will be discussed with three guests: Inês Araújo, assistant professor at the Department of Biomedical Science and Medicine at the University of Algarve and principal researcher at CBMR (Centre) for Biomedical Research), where she studies brain repair capacity, Edmeia Monteiro, a doctor with a specialty in Neurology at the Clínica do Coração, and Marta Camacho, a neuropsychologist at the Champalimaud Foundation Clinical Center, where she assesses cognitive functions in patients with cognitive complaints (usually after chemotherapy, brain radiotherapy) and in cognitive rehabilitation.

The doors of the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos are open «to all who wanted to participate in this celebration, where we will have a cocktail and entertainment throughout the night».
