Monchique sawmillMonchique wants to have a multipurpose space built and up and running within a year, to receive events that take place in the mountain village, such as the Feira dos Enchidos or the Feira do Presunto. Yesterday, the City Council signed the commitment to buy and sell the space in the old sawmill, where the work will be carried out, and the deed must be signed by the end of the year.

As revealed by the mayor of Monchique to the Sul Informação, the purchase of the land and the set of buildings that make up the old sawmill should cost the City Council's coffers around 350 thousand euros.

As for the investment for the construction of the pavilion that will host the fairs, Rui André, «in a low estimate», points to 500 thousand euros.

Until the deed is done, the municipality will prepare the project, which intends to "make the most of the building" and the goal is that, "in about a year, the pavilion will already be executed, that is, in the summer of the year coming', in time to receive the Ham Fair, which usually takes place in July.

However, the construction of a multipurpose space is not the only objective for the property: «it is a two-phase project, the first is the construction of the pavilion that will host the events we normally organize, but there is also the intention to use it all. that industrial heritage to create a museological space that shows the importance that the activity of wood and sawmill has had for the municipality of Monchique throughout its history», adds the mayor.

For this step of musealisation, there is already «a pre-agreement with the Museum of Portimão and the University of Algarve, to create a work team that will help to preserve this heritage».

Rui André also has the idea of creating in that place «a space for processing wood, not industrial, as it was, but to develop prototypes, or design furniture pieces, but this would have to be done in partnership or with the IEFP or with some University».
