BenagilA landslide was registered at 12:50 pm this Sunday, at Maria Luísa beach, in Albufeira, but according to the captain of the Port of Portimão, "apparently" there are no injuries.

In Benagil (Lagoa), there was no landslide, but the Sul Informação he found on the spot only a problem with a tourist boat, which, due to the agitation of the sea and the rising tide, was trapped inside a cave that can only be accessed by sea.

The six passengers, of Dutch nationality, and the crew of the small vessel were eventually removed from the site by Ferragudo's lifeguard, according to Correio da Manhã.

The news that four people were buried on Maria Luísa beach and of a second collapse in Benagil are thus disproved.

Speaking to TVI24, commander Rui Santos Pereira also said that witnesses who were at the scene at the time of the occurrence said that "no one was at the site of the collapse". This information has already been confirmed by Paulo Isabel, commander of the Southern Maritime Authority, around 14:40 pm, who assured CMTV that there are no victims of this debacle.

At the moment, a cleaning of the debris is being carried out and an inspection will be carried out on the cliff that suffered the collapse, located at one end of the beach, by technicians from the Portuguese Environment Agency, to check «to see if there is evidence of [a new ] collapse'.

The Civil Protection website reports the existence of 18 elements of the protection and relief forces, supported by seven vehicles, on Maria Luísa beach.

In Benagil, where one of the biggest and most beautiful caves on the Algarve coast is located, visited every day by dozens of maritime tourist boats, the boats are no longer leaving the beach due to the agitation of the sea, and there is even a sign in English, warning that “today and in the next few days [there is] bad sea conditions for visiting the caves” (see photo below).

On August 21, 2009, a landslide on Maria Luísa beach resulted in the death of five people and injuries to two others, in what constituted the biggest accident with cliffs in the country since there are official records.
