Olhão whale (3) alteredA bearded whale, which landed on the coast of Ilha da Armona on 11th August, was removed this night from the sand by the Captaincy of the Port of Olhão. The animal, which was in an advanced state of decomposition, weighed 3 and a half tons and was more than 7 meters long, which complicated the operation, considered by the Maritime Authority as "complex".

The removal of the whale was coordinated by the Captain of the Port of Olhão and required the use of four vessels, one from the Maritime Police, one from the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos and two civil vessels, a crane from DocaPesca and a truck from AmbiOlhão.

The whale was towed from Armona Mar beach, between sand banks and with Sueste, to the port of Olhão, where it was collected by a crane. According to the Maritime Authority, "the route of about 6 kilometers took two hours to complete."

The Maritime Authority says that "this action prevented the Armona beach from being banned from bathing for reasons of public health, which would be very harmful for users of that island, especially on a long weekend in August."
