dictionary priberamBolembrean, sexing, omnibenevolent, tardogotic, normotenaz, expediting, ecomuseum, microzone, ichthyus or phonium. These are just a few of the 842 new words in the Portuguese language, integrated at the beginning of the year by Priberam Dictionary.

Priberam has just announced that its Portuguese Language Dictionary was enriched with a total of 842 new entries during the first half of 2016 alone, during which a total of 4.328 entries were also changed.

The announcement was made in Lisbon, during the recent “Jornadas dos Diários”, in a presentation by the linguists of Priberam Helena Figueira, Pedro Mendes and Cláudia Pinto, who revealed that, on June 30, the dictionary included a total of 115.821 entries, the which makes it one of the most complete and updated references in the Portuguese language.

Helena Figueira explained that one of the advantages of Priberam Dictionary of Portuguese Language (DPLP) is the ability to quickly adapt and monitor the evolution of the language.

Many of the new words come from direct suggestions, but also from Priberam's analysis of user surveys, news corpora, websites and blogs.

“Many of the invalid searches are made with the wrong spelling – after all, it is also to know how to spell a certain word that people look for a dictionary!”, says Helena Figueira, “but when we detect that there are many searches of users trying to find the meaning of a well-formed word that is not in the dictionary is a sign that this word probably deserves a new entry”.

And the linguist from Priberam gives an example of new words recently added to the DPLP and that emerged as a result of direct or indirect suggestions from readers: bolembrean, sexing, omnibenevolent, tardogotic, normotenaz, expediting, ecomuseum, microzone, ichthyus or phonium.

The technology behind DPLP goes back to work done by Priberam since 1995, but the genesis of Dictionary Online, as it is known today, it emerged in 2008, when the company licensed the content of the New Lello Dictionary of the Portuguese Language, with the aim of creating a lexicographical platform.

Despite always evolving, as of June 30, 2016, these were the main DPLP statistics: 115.821 entries; 5.163 unfoldings with spelling changes; 1.599 subscripts; 7.037 voiceovers; 217.379 definitions; 51.666 synonyms; 4.180 antonyms; 10.031 exceptions with examples.

O DPLP it also includes the graphic variants of the Brazilian standard as well as the spelling before and after the Orthographic Agreement.
