Caravelblog2Eight young researchers board the Vera Cruz caravel to participate in a scientific cruise that celebrates the 20th anniversary of Ciência Viva in Summer.

The trip Ao Leme with Ciência Viva, made in collaboration with Aporvela – Portuguese Sailing Training Association, will have seven days of navigation and four stopovers: Sines (2 August), Lisbon (4 August), Ílhavo (7 August) ) and Porto (9th of August).

Next Tuesday, August 2nd, the Vera Cruz caravel will dock at the Port of Recreio de Sines. On land, at Praia Vasco da Gama, an open-air science festival will take place throughout the day, between 09:00 and 24:00, organized by the Centros Ciência Viva do Lousal, Estremoz, lakes, Faro and Tavira, in collaboration with the Municipality of Sines, the Administration of the Port of Sines and Algarve, Sines Tecnopolo and 21 companies, associations and scientific institutions in the region.

shows of science, workshops, creation of sculptures with waste collected from the beach and the sea, tasting of mackerel and sustainable fishing, visits to the Vera Cruz caravel, puppet theater whose characters are known scientists, and astronomical observations are some of the experiences available to the general public.

On each stopover of the caravel, the Ciência Viva Centers organize a science festival, as part of the Ciência Viva no Verão em Rede program, which continues until 15 September, with more than 1000 activities throughout the country.

The young researchers participating in this expedition, all in their 20s, belong to laboratories in the areas of astronomy, geophysics and sea sciences: Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (Lisbon), Dom Luiz Institute (Lisbon), Interdisciplinary Center of Marine and Environmental Research (Porto), Center for the Study of the Environment and the Sea (Aveiro), MARE (Lisbon and Figueira da Foz) and Marine Science Center (Faro).

Throughout this scientific cruise, some of the major ocean themes for the coming decades will be addressed: sea level rise, climate change, microplastics, pollution, coastal erosion, overfishing and the exploitation of marine resources, such as drugs.

Along the way, scientists will also make observations and measurements of oceanographic parameters, such as salinity and temperature, and collection of water and biological materials for analysis.

This scientific adventure can be followed by the public in real time through the blog At the helm with Ciência Viva.
