Ciência Viva de Lagos leads the Algarve to see stars in Fóia and the depths of the caves

CCVLagos ModelAstronomy at the top of Fóia (Monchique) or in Aldeia da Pedralva (Vila do Bispo), visits to the caves of Ibn'Ammar (Lagoa), Varejota (Loulé) or Amarela (Rogil, Aljezur), walks along the Via Algarviana, observation and bird ringing, trips to discover the urban geology of Lagos or the dinosaur footprints on Salema beach, or a visit to Lagos Market, to find out more about the species of fish we eat.

These are just some of the 68 actions that the Lagos Living Science Center promotes between mid-July and 15th of September, all free, but some subject to prior registration.

In common, these activities have the fact that they are always carried out outdoors, outside the doors of the Lagos CCV, all over the Western Algarve.

One of the actions that returns is the «Science to the South», which in reality should be…in the sun, as it is a tent that will cover 19 beaches in the Algarve and where the public of all ages can experience, play and learn most.

“We go looking for people where they are. And in the summer, they are on the beach, so we go there too», he explained to Sul Informação the director of CCV Lagos.

Among the novelties of this year's edition, Luís Azevedo Rodrigues highlights astronomy in Fóia, as it is «a place with a fantastic view and visibility of the stars».

This year, with activities planned for seven municipalities (Lagos, Vila do Bispo, Aljezur, Portimão, Lagoa, Silves and Loulé), some of them in partnership with six other entities, the director of CCV de Lagos hopes to increase the number of participants in this intense Summer Science program. «In 2015, we had close to 3000 people, this time we may even have more».

Spanish bikers invaded the CCV in Lagos

The presentation of the program took place on Friday, from 17:00, when the Lagos Living Science Center had its door open. So open, that it even received an unexpected visit from a group of bikers Spaniards, who got lost in the streets of the city center on their way to the Concentration of Faro. Once there, they ended up taking a look at the CCV. And they liked it!

Also present at the presentation of the Science in Summer program, Sara Coelho, Councilor for Culture at the City of Lagos, highlighted the importance of the work carried out by the CCV and expressed the municipality's interest in continuing its «close collaboration».

«A Center like these is a place where we can offer Science in its most practical version to those who live in this area and to those who visit us. For our children, this direct contact with Science opens them to perspectives in future and academic terms, they gain other visions that allow them to take other paths that were hitherto unknown», he said.
