Rosa Mendes Literary AwardThe «National Prize for Historical Essay António Rosa Mendes», with a pecuniary value of €10, is once again launched by the City Council of Vila Real de Santo António, the municipality from which the renowned historian and university professor was born. algarvian that inspires you, deceased in 2013.

The value of this prize, which is launched for the second time and on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the birth of António Rosa Mendes, makes it the largest competition in the country that aims to promote research and literature on history. The contest also opens the possibility for the winner to see their work published by a commercial publisher.

With biennial periodicity, this award aims to reward the best unpublished literary work in the form of a historical essay, with a free theme, but limited to the period of the Modern Age. The competition is launched as part of a tribute by the VRSA municipality and the University of Algarve to the illustrious Vila Real.

All nationals or foreigners will be admitted to the competition, as long as they present the work in Portuguese. The works submitted must be original, unpublished and not previously awarded. The regulation can be consulted in full. here in PDF.

The deadline for receiving the competing works ends on December 31, 2016, and the jury must make a decision by May 12, 2017. The prize will later be awarded to the author of the winning work, at the Town Hall of Vila Real de Santo António, in May 22, 2017.

For President of the Municipality of VRSA Luís Gomes, «this competition, whose prize is one of the largest at national level, honors the name and legacy of the illustrious Vila Realense António Rosa Mendes and makes the municipality a reference in terms of culture and regional and national historical research'.

For the purposes of awarding the prize, the jury will consist of five personalities invited by the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, namely: Joaquim Romero de Magalhães (University of Coimbra); Esteves Pereira (New University of Lisbon); José Eduardo Horta Correia (University of Algarve); Luís Filipe Oliveira (University of Algarve); and José Carlos Barros (Municipal Assembly of Vila Real de Santo António).

Daniel Norte Giebels, author of the work «D. João de Melo e Castro”, and Marco Sousa Santos, author of the work “The representation of female honor in the Algarve in the Modern Period: the gathering of S. João Baptista de Tavira”, were the winners of the first edition of the competition, in 2015, having shared the prize between them.

 

About António Rosa Mendes:

Born in VRSA, António Rosa Mendes was an emeritus professor, respected and admired by students and colleagues and by the entire community of his relations, having contributed to boost scientific research on the History of the Algarve.

During his life, he was publicly recognized as a man of integrity, cultured, humanist, detached, humble, with character, principles and civic courage, having his roots in the Algarve marked all his academic, civic, social and political intervention.
