Sea peopleThe edition of three itineraries about the Barlavento Algarvio – “Underwater Routes”, “Coast Routes” and even “Sea Villages” -, as well as the creation of PescaMap, to preserve and enhance the identity and traditions of the fishing community through production from a map of the back of the Algarve, are some of the novelties of the seminar “Gentes de Mar”, which has just been postponed to the 8th of July, at 14 pm, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Portimão.

The seminar will present the Barlavento Development Agency project, with the same name, as well as the strategy for the Coastal CLLD in Barlavento, the work developed and the financing and incentive programs.

The “Gentes de Mar” project is the result of a partnership between the Barlavento Development Agency (ADB) and the Sea Science Center (CCMAR), an associated structure of the University of Algarve.

It aims to "promote and enhance the cultural and natural heritage of the coastline" of the Barlavento Algarve, encouraging its "preservation as a way to promote local tourism in a sustainable way, implementing activities to promote and publicize the territory and its products and projecting it in the regional, national and European context'.

Jorge Gonçalves, from CCMAR, and José Moura Bastos, from the Barlavento Development Agency, will present some of the activities included in this project, namely the three aforementioned publications.

The “Underwater Routes”, “Coastal Routes” are oriented towards marine and coastal biodiversity and maritime-tourism activities, while the ones from Aldeias de Mar intend to “value the cultural essence of these villages, especially those of the fishing communities”.

On the other hand, within the scope of the sustainability of the coastal zone of the Barlavento do Algarve, Jorge Gonçalves, from CCMAR, will also present the PescaMap project, which aims to produce a map of the Algarve's bottoms, based on the toponymy of Algarve fishermen .

This project intends, at the same time, to promote sustainable and sustainable fishing, compatible with the protection and conservation of the marine environment, through the production of maps of the Algarve's biodiversity.

At this time of starting a new cycle of community support to coastal zones, based on a Community-Based Local Development Strategy (DLBC), This Seminar will also present the coastal CLLD strategy for the Barlavento, approved under the European Fund for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (FEAMP), the management instruments, the allocated funds and the typology of candidate projects, in support of competitiveness and sustainable development of the fishing and aquaculture sector, the creation and maintenance of jobs that contribute to improving the quality of life of fishing communities.
