The work of four decades of Mértola in the investigation and enhancement of its archaeological heritage earned this municipality in Baixo Alentejo the Institution Award, awarded on Friday by the Portuguese Association of Museology (APOM).
This new recognition of the work done in Mértola, by the Archaeological Field and by the Museum, which already has 14 museums spread throughout the county, but mainly concentrated in the village, comes in the same week in which the its inclusion in the Indicative List of Portugal to World Heritage.
The APOM Awards also distinguished other projects and initiatives in the Alentejo, in a year in which the Algarve was completely zero in terms of these awards.
Thus, the Manuel Vicente Guerreiro Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum, located in Santa-Clara-a-Nova, in the municipality of Almodôvar, received an Honorable Mention, in the category of Best Tourist Information, the Botanical Museum of the Polytechnic Institute of Beja received another Honorable Mention, in the category of Best Cultural Extension Service, while Merchandising for the new Museum of Medronho, at Herdade de Montes Santos, in Alqueva, was also distinguished with an Honorable Mention by the APOM, as well as the exhibition «Água-Património de Moura», by the Municipality of Moura, in the category of Best Exposure.
This year, APOM distinguished the Porto Mercy Museum with the Best Portuguese Museum Award 2016.
This museum is located in the historic center of Porto, on Rua das Flores, in the building that was the headquarters of the institution from the mid-2013th century until the year XNUMX. Over the centuries, the building has undergone several changes, being the most recent adaptation to museum functions.
The Museum has the dual objective of making known the history of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Porto and its institutional purposes, as well as publicizing its art collections, through the provision of a set of resources that reflect its memory and identity. organization, projecting it into the future.
The visit to the Museum is also an opportunity to get to know the past and present of this area of the city better.
The museological route includes the Igreja da Misericórdia, a XNUMXth century building that received a major intervention in the XNUMXth century, led by Nicolau Nasoni, and the Gallery of Benefactors, an example of the city's iron and glass architecture.
In this category of Best Portuguese Museum, the Municipal Museums of Leiria and Pinhel and the nucleus of the Roman Theater of the Museum of Lisbon also received Honorable Mentions.
