The Algarve continues to be the region in the country with the most beaches awarded the blue flag, now having 88 (three more than in 2015).
The three new flags were awarded to the beaches of Amoreira-Mar, in the municipality of Aljezur, Rocha Baixinha, in Albufeira, and Armona-Ria, in Olhão.
Moreover, as usual, Albufeira is the county with the most awarded beaches, in a total of 25 (one more than last year), followed by Vila do Bispo, with 11, and Loulé, with 10 (see the full list below ).
In the Algarve, the four marinas – Albufeira, Lagos, Portimão and Vilamoura – were also awarded.
Across the country, the Blue Flag will be flown this year on 314 beaches, 15 more attributions than in 2015, surpassing the three hundred barrier for the first time, announced the president of the promoting association in Portugal. The award will also be given to 17 marinas, two more than last year.
José Archer stressed that attributing more than 300 distinctions to beaches is a “significant” mark, especially in the year that celebrates 30 years of the Blue Flag, under the motto “Thirty years, thirty criteria, one objective”.
This number “represents approximately 55% of the designated beaches [with official recognition] in Portugal”, placing, in terms of percentage, the country at the top in the world.
In terms of gross values, Portugal, with 314 Blue Flags, is the fifth country with the most awards, among the 54 countries that award them, behind Spain (578), Turkey (436), Greece (395) and France (379 ).
Of the total number of flags that will be flown on Portuguese beaches, 292 are on coastal beaches and 22 are on river beaches, with 10 among them that had never received the distinction.
