The second phase of the future Urban Park of Armação de Pêra will have the support of a specialist in problem solving in areas subject to flooding, with vast experience, after having worked on similar plans made for Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon or, more recently, Albufeira. Rosa Palma, mayor of Silves, the entity that promotes the creation of this new Urban Park, to be installed in the eastern part of Armação, along the banks and mouth of the Ribeira de Alcantarilha, revealed to the Sul Informação that the work will have two phases – one whose public tender was already launched on the 18th of April, and a second phase, "more technically complicated", which involves creating a system that avoids the frequent flooding of downtown, in particular from the streets of Pescadores, Manuel de Arriaga and Alentejo.
“Whenever it rains more and especially if it coincides with high tides, there are floods in that area. Therefore, the creation of a retention basin is now foreseen”, added the mayor.
This basin to deal with the floods will be connected to the rainwater discharge channel, which will be the object of deep reconstruction in the second phase of the work, associated with the construction of a pumping station.
The retention basin, to be built in areas further upstream from the Alcantarilha stream, as well as the other operations, are part of a project that will be defined by the team led by Professor José Saldanha Matos, and which the Silves Council hopes will solve the problem. recurrent flooding in downtown Armação de Pêra.
But the Nascente Urban Park of Armação de Pêra is already taking its first steps. This first phase of the work, already up for competition, should cost 105 thousand euros.
The future Urban Park is located on the right bank of the Ribeira de Alcantarilha, developing on a plot of land with 24.500 square meters (almost two and a half hectares), with the first phase of the work being tendered for the south of the channel. of rainwater drainage from the center of Vila de Armação de Pêra, covering an intervention area of 11.300 square meters.
"It is an area that has been very abandoned, but now we want to recover, so that it can be used by the population and visitors, creating a leisure area there," Rosa Palma told Sul Informação.
The Urban Park project envisages the implementation of green spaces and a pedestrian circuit along the banks of the Ribeira de Alcantarilha, covered in gravel, limited by a curb guide made of 100% recycled plastic material, ensuring the natural drainage of this area.
The space object of intervention in two phases will be cleaned and planted with autochthonous species and Mediterranean riverside flora.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to view an environmental information panel, in addition to other urban furniture that can be enjoyed by the public, explains the municipality of Silves, in a press release.
The Urban Park will also benefit from solar lighting, through lamps incorporated in photovoltaic panels that capture light energy from the sun, transforming it into electrical energy, stored in rechargeable batteries.
In the intervention zone, a retention basin will also be built to deal with the floods, with connection to the rainwater discharge channel, which will be the object of deep reconstruction in the second phase of the work, associated with the construction of a pumping station.
"People shouldn't expect a heavy work there, but rather an intervention that enhances that space on the bank of the river and next to the beach, in order to create another green area for everyone to enjoy, that dignifies Armação de Pêra and contributes to requalify its tourism offer», concluded the mayor of Silves.
