Lagos Sea WeekThe seminar "Managing coastal zones, seas and oceans", on Friday, May 20, European Maritime Day, marks the start of the Week of the Sea, in Lagos, in a program that runs until the 28th. in which the county celebrates Fisherman's Day. The program includes, in addition to the seminar, various activities, from visits to companies in the sector, a showcooking in the Municipal Markets of Avenida and Santo Amaro and a conference.

The seminar, which will take place in the Auditorium of the Paços do Concelho century. XXI, begins with a round table on «Coastal zone management: problems and solutions», with the participation of the deputy mayor of Lagos Hugo Pereira, Isabel Guerra, from Docapesca, commander Pedro Carvalho Pinto, from the Captaincy of Porto de Lagos, and Sebastião Teixeira, regional responsible for the Portuguese Environment Agency. The round table is moderated by Elisabete Rodrigues, director of Sul Informação.

There will also be presentations by Rodrigo Ferreira Brum, manager of PO Mar 2020, David Santos, president of CCDRA, Moura Bastos, director of the Barlavento Development Association, and Luís Pestana Araújo, president of the Portuguese Tourism Board.

At the seminar, the central themes of the management of coastal zones, seas and oceans will be debated, seeking to raise awareness of the importance of the economy of the sea in the municipality and in the region: its structure, the lines that compose it, its potential and its problems and possible constraints, so that conclusions and proposals for future actions can be presented that allow and favor the growth of this important sector.

On Saturday, May 21st, between 10:00 and 12:00, there will be the showcooking “Flavors of the Sea Show”, in the Municipal Markets of Avenida and Santo Amaro.

On Monday, 23 May, a day dedicated to Ports, Maritime Transport and Naval Industries, there will be visits to Marina de Lagos and to the Nautical Center of the company Sopromar. On Thursday, 26th of May, national holiday, the day will be dedicated to Water Sports. At Cais da Solaria, between 10 am and 13 pm, there are activities to be carried out by the Clube de Vela (sailing, paddle, canoeing), with prior registration. At midday, at the Clube de Vela de Lagos, there is an action with Francisco Lufinha, world record holder for Kitesurfing, on «Nautical sports as a factor for development and entrepreneurship».

On Friday, May 27th, Aquaculture will be the theme. Therefore, at 14:30 pm there will be a visit to the oyster exploration in Vale da Lama, by the company “OstraSelect”, while between 15 pm and 17 pm, at Sopromar, there will be training on safety and rescue issues, aimed at the fishing community.

Finally, to culminate this intense week dedicated to the Sea in Lagos, the 28th of May is celebrated Fisherman's Day. Thus, between 10:00 am and 16:00 pm, the “Diligente” lifeguard will be open for visits.

At 16:30 pm, it will be the turn of Bênção dos Barcos and Tour to Ponta da Piedade, with Docapesca being the place to concentrate the tour. Closing the festivities, at 19 pm, in Bairro 00 de Abril da Meia-Praia, there will be a social gathering.

The municipal executive of Lagos explains that this vast program seeks, «in this symbolic way, to link the “old sea” and the “new sea”». Because, «if Fisherman's Day seeks to rescue our historical memory as a community, alluding to our collective heritage relating to uses and customs, traditional economic activities and millenary traditions linked to the sea, the European Maritime Day calls us to the challenges of the future with new uses, new experiences, new sectors of activity, with their new rites, new traditions and an always new (and renewed!) relationship with the sea».

Therefore, it is the objective of Sea Week in Lagos «to look at this entire sea, in an integrative logic that allows us to define new routes and new directions, not forgetting the centuries-old relationship between Lagos and the sea».
